I erroneously thought the premise of this book would make for a side-splitting, hilarious, tears-down-the-cheeks read. The main character is a mural artist from LA who was bequeathed a B&B in the wilds of Alaska which she goes to visit with her best friend's older brother. Could be funny, right??? For me, the book fell flat right after the lightening hit which is virtually ten minutes after they got out of the plane.

Another winner in my opinion. I love all of her books. Even though sometimes they are a little strange and her characters have very interesting sex lives and no qualms about multiple partners! Oh my! But, once you get past all that there is always a good mystery underneath. This book is sort of the next in a new storyline. Merry is pregnant with twins from six fathers, yeah I know, so she's faerie, it's allowed. Demi-fey in LA start getting murdered and Merry and the PI firm she works for are called in for their expertise. The killer leaves strange clues at the crime scene and the team has to put everything together to solve the murders. After a lot of detective work and the reluctant help of the self-proclaimed fairy godmother of LA the team solves the crimes and the demi-fey are safe once again. I was hoping to see Merry's babies in this novel, but it seems I will have to wait until the next Merry installment!

Imaginary Friends by Yolanda Jackson is one of those books that grab you from the very beginning, thrusting you into a world where make-believe merges with reality. From the start I was captivated by the fertile imagination of the author as she takes readers on an escapade into a very dark and frightening place. In fact, the opening chapter to this book is one of the most riveting I have ever had the pleasure to read. The pace of this book is fast, the action furious, and the spectacle of carnage and death is shockingly brutal. It's clear to me that this book would make for a stunning horror film. Imaginary Friends is the tale of a young girl who has been horribly abused by her mother and the cruel strangers that her mother allows to victimize her. This abuse becomes too much for her to handle and she conjures forth from her imagination a small, but eclectic group of friends to protect her. At first, it appears that her friends are just visions that only she can see. But all begins to change when the young girl begins to send her imaginary friends to kill the people who are abusing her. But is it really her imaginary friends who are doing the killing? Or is she the real murderer? Imaginary Friends is a revenge story that is driven by the mad rage of a tortured young girl. Thematically, it is more tragedy, than fantasy. Yet, the spectacle of death and horror looms over the entire tale. If there is a drawback to this book, is that it fizzles out as it draws to an end. I was disappointed that the intriguing storyline which gripped me during the first half of the book dissipated into a foray of mindless violence. In many ways this book reminds me of The Oliver Stone film "Natural Born Killers". Like Stone's film, the horrifying acts of violence featured within the pages of Imaginary Friends become repetitive and ultimately overwhelms the story. With a little tweaking of the plot and editorial polish, this story would be epic and worthy of more stars. Yet, for all of its faults, I would recommend this book to readers thirsty for a gritty and visceral depiction of one young girl's violent response to the world that unleashed her.

Interesting subject and material; poorly written.

A cultural critique which is insightful and - I can't help saying it - so right! One of those books I want to order 10 copies of and pass to friends and family and ask, "What do you think about THIS?" Reading this text is influencing how I read other popular culture. In the New York Times, for example, last Sunday, the headline was "Bottoms Up!" - and the caption, under 3 leering young men - was something like "Seeds of democracy seen in strip clubs in Iraq." We fail to see the objectification of women as oppression. Somehow we mistakenly think that pornography is a sign of freedom instead of a tightening of patriarchy. Ariel Levy is both eloquent and convincing.

There definitely is a plot tucked away there inside this book. It just takes a while to find. Mil Millington is a columnist for the Guardian. This is his first novel, an "anti-romantic-comedy", which tells the story of British Pel Dalton, put-upon university IT support worker and his German girlfriend Ursula. Their bickering can be both incredibly funny, and incredibly exhausting, but this is part of what keeps them together. Add to this mix, their two sons, Chinese gangs, nasty biochemical weaponry, stolen money and missing colleagues, and you've got this book.

While describing the overwhelming task of finding the funds and labor to build a cathedral in the 1100's, and then the detail of the actual building, Follet takes the reader into the lives of princesses (Aliena), accused witches (Ellen), masons (Tom Builder), and nobility (William Hamleigh). Totally engrossing

Joanna Philbin'in ayrıcalıklı çocuklar hakkında bir kitap yazdığını ilk duyduğumda, onu havaya uçurdum.
