I should start out by saying, his story telling style prejudiced me. I'm not a fan of this particular type of ramble and I found it worse right at the beginning because we kept stopping and walking further back in time to explain things. Slowly, as the novel progressed I did see the method (pattern) to his madness and I understood the structure of the book more. The author also uses a very-- whimsical voice, in tone, in dry humor and in description. Two out of three of those don't bother me. A lot of descriptions and meanderings felt just-- too much, like extra jewels on an already full shirt. That said. It's a fascinating book of coincidence and portents. The plot kept me, even though I felt the book was going to be far more heavily weighted towards a different segment of the story. Eugenides treats a difficult subject with the sorts of humor I tend to enjoy-- dry. Eugenides doesn't shy away from the vagaries of growing up. From Drugs, to the politcs of the 70s, to the lingering culture of the immigrant forefathers of the book. I'm fighting the urge to call some of the main players caricatures, though they are on some level, I think this is my own fault, I can't connect to the things they do, they things they care about or are prejudiced about, though I do not doubt people with those feelings existed. All that said, I'd recommend it. It's an interesting journey. For everyone. And it's about far more than the hermaphrodite main character, Cal.
