I should start out by saying, his story telling style prejudiced me. I'm not a fan of this particular type of ramble and I found it worse right at the beginning because we kept stopping and walking further back in time to explain things. Slowly, as the novel progressed I did see the method (pattern) to his madness and I understood the structure of the book more. The author also uses a very-- whimsical voice, in tone, in dry humor and in description. Two out of three of those don't bother me. A lot of descriptions and meanderings felt just-- too much, like extra jewels on an already full shirt. That said. It's a fascinating book of coincidence and portents. The plot kept me, even though I felt the book was going to be far more heavily weighted towards a different segment of the story. Eugenides treats a difficult subject with the sorts of humor I tend to enjoy-- dry. Eugenides doesn't shy away from the vagaries of growing up. From Drugs, to the politcs of the 70s, to the lingering culture of the immigrant forefathers of the book. I'm fighting the urge to call some of the main players caricatures, though they are on some level, I think this is my own fault, I can't connect to the things they do, they things they care about or are prejudiced about, though I do not doubt people with those feelings existed. All that said, I'd recommend it. It's an interesting journey. For everyone. And it's about far more than the hermaphrodite main character, Cal.

not a very good book; but barbara rosenblat is a *truly excellent* reader. w/r/t any audiobook you *might* have an interest in: if barbara rosenblat's the reader, change 'might' to 'do'. get it. listen to it. seriously.
Standard fairy tales and other stories for kids are turned upside down and pulled out sideways. This Klein bottle of a book is for anyone of any age. The youngest ones will get the base silliness, and as they age they'll get the finer points of humour. Adults will love it, unless they're missing a critical part of the humour section of their brain. You must read this book very carefully, from the top left corner of the front cover to the bottom right corner of the back cover. EVERYTHING must be read. You won't regret it.

The story just keeps alluring me to read on until i read finish it. Very addictive. Very funny. Things never turn out the way to be, but for the protagonist, the life is getting better even as he rants about his 'weird' room-mates, crazy sex-life and warped up ambition to be an author. The ending is too much of a tragedy, but its a sharp reminder that life is never too smooth sailing. Best to be read with a light heart.

Very funny, very nineties and very accurate! Adrian is such an enduring character. Highly recommended.

A collaberative effort between Norton, Bradley, and May, and you may think "Where could this go wrong", but it may be a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. A decent read, but sort of a let down with the cast of star writers. Also, each writer than wrote a separate sequel. The only one worth reading is Andre Norton's- Golden Trillium.
