Well-written book about conformity in high school. Jerry Spinelli is a great writer, and I can imagine young adults feeling like his books are real page turners. It's a quick read and I invested in the characters.

DNF - For now. I really like Kelley Armstrong's writing. I've read a few books in her adult paranormal series and read and loved her Darkest Powers series of which this new series sort of spins of off. Although I got about half way into this book though I found I got kind of bored and moved on to other novels. I thought I'd eventually go back to this one, but after a few weeks I'm not feeling it anymore. The book is written with the same simplicity that readers saw in the Darkest Powers series, but what saved those books was the immediate jump into the action. From the first chapter there was an eeriness that gripped me as a reader. In The Gathering things start slowly, events unravel at a tortoise style rate and as far as I got they didn't pick up any. I liked the main character, Maya is interesting and strong and sure of herself and I really liked her relationship with Daniel. In the possible love triangle between Maya, Dan and Rafe I'd be a Dan fan. Overall, the story was interesting and had potential, but I think the simplicity of writing is definitely geared towards a younger audience although I read YA quite a bit, I just couldn't get into this book the way I wanted to. I might try it again sometime, but for now I'm moving on. Interesting story though, which I'm sure will evolve into something high paced eventually.

Dr. Chapman outlines the five languages and asserts that we all have a primary love language. He makes the argument that we can enhance our relationships, both romantic and non-romantic, by learning to speak others primary love language. The book does a great job of spelling out the love languages, giving examples and even giving some practicals to learn how to discover other's love language.

The book had a slow start, going through the meticulous beginnings of the Worlds Fair but once the construction started and Holmes really set his plans into motion, the book too picked up speed. The little clips of information throughout the book were very fascinating. It was really fascinating how I would forget I was reading a history book.

I made it about half way through this book- after two tries. The authors did a presentation at Hope, and I was impressed and interested. But it turns out that they toned themselves down quite a bit for their presentation at a (relatively) conservative college. I found the book pretty alienating. It was a while before I could call myself a "feminist" again. I want to be a feminist if that means that I believe that women should have all the same opportunities that men have. If that means that I get to be an equal partner with my husband. If that means that you have to treat me with respect. If it means that I get to decide for myself whether I'm going to stay home with babies all day. If it means that I question the images and ideas that society sends me. But the trouble is, Baumgardner and Richards make it about more than that. It's about abortion, promiscuity, STDs, leaving your religion. And that's not me.

When this book was given to me as a gift, it came with a note from the giver that said, "I know, I know . . . but this book is way more awesome than it has any business being." And this book is awesome. It is wildly inventive and a fascinating read. It imagines what would happen in our world if there were to be a zombie outbreak, how it might start, how it would escalate, how different governments and people might react. It tells the story through first hand accounts that cover every aspect of the war, from its beginning through the recovery period. It's the kind of book I wish I could read again for the first time because it was that enjoyable.
