Title in German: Die Novizin Sonea is starting her training as a novice at the Magician´s Guild but she isn´t prepared for the animosity and dislike of her classmates and some teachers. Her powers are far greater than every other´s what doesn´t help her either to make friends. Especially the harassments of her classmate Regin are making her life a hell. But Sonea has another secret only Lord Lorlen and Rothen, her guardian know about. High Lord Akkarin uses the art of Black Magic which is strictly forbidden for members of the guild. And suddenly dead bodies are found all over the town killed by Black Magic.. and Lord Akkarin is taking Sonea´s training in his own hands. Honestly I was soon bored by this second book. The harassments of Sonea´s classmates were much too long-winded and nerve-wracking and made me think "No, not again!" and Regin – even as Sonea worked hard to move into second class – did follow her only that he could harass her more.. how believable is something like that? But the story itself is getting more exciting at the end of the book especially when Akkarin takes the responsibility of Sonea´s training upon himself. This was the only reason which made me read the third book I admit because I was curious to learn more about the relationsship between Akkarin and Sonea. 3.5 stars always fall in love with all Johanna's book :)
I didn't like this book as much as her other ones. I really wouldn't recommend it unless you are really into random descriptions about furniture and wall colors. I guess it might be a good read if you were redecorating your house and wanted a 1970s New Jersey Italian style?!

The book includes many action/event/media fliers from organizations like Prairie Fire, Weather Underground, Women of Vietnam, CUAV that I've never seen before or imagined; "sing a battle song; poems by women in the weather underground." $1. This book is an accessible narration of Diana's political, social & emotional world underground & above from the 60s to present; it de-mystifies how people go into hiding & what they do there. Most of the same stuff people do above ground if you're seam wripping the dominant paradigms. Yet it is a priceless addition to texts that show the informal weaves that can keep those criminalized out of prison. I understood but didn't relate to the way she talked about the different lovers she had throughout so many political battles & life changes. Very matter-of-fact "the revolution is my boyfriend" sort of philosophy. Yet she critiqued the word "revolution" towards its end as flat, but then returned to the "arm the spirit" concept with a quote including "revolution" & "revolutionaries" as weight holding words.? So it's a great account of u.s. labor organizing, anti-war movement, direct action, womens consciousness groups, & parenting incidences or events from the late 60s to present by someone who's still active.

Gurion ben-Judah Maccabee would have us believe he does not intend to start a war. He would have us believe that he might be the potential messiah, or that he might not be. His essay regarding potentially potential messiahs might be the fulcrum upon which this massive novel pivots. I have the spent the better part of the last year reading this "scripture," a herculean task, and I am left astonished, as if I'm saying goodbye to an old friend. "Ambitious" is the wrong word to choose for Adam Levin's first outing, "sprawling" sells it short, and to call it "inspirational" does no justice to the dozens of micro-novellas swirling just below the surface. I will say that it's strange to think that four days in Aptakisic junior high school in the suburbs of Chicago can span more than 1,000 pages, but perhaps it's not so surprising when the events which transpire reach biblical proportions. They begin innocently enough: when Gurion ben-Judah, a Torah scholar who has been thrown out of no less than three schools for violent tendencies, falls in love with a red-headed girl named Eliza June Watermark. Gurion fancies himself a prisoner of Aptakisic's CAGE program for troubled youth, and emerges as the charismatic leader of "The Side of Damage," a mutiny against the arrangement that swells to disturbing heights. This is a novel written by someone who has no fear. He casts aside the boundaries that so many others tiptoe around, and to think that he's willing to do so in his first novel may serve as a harbinger of bigger and better things to come. This is not a book for the faint-of-heart or the impatient, nor is it a story for those unwilling to commit something of themselves to the task. Every page is layer upon layer of plot, metaphor, implication. It's rich and it's heavy, and it makes no apologies. "Seven skinny cows cannibalizing seven fat ones as dreamed by a man who'd never dealt with cattle: that, with its crystal-clear one-to-one relationship between the symbols and what they corresponded to-and without anything extra, without spilling a single drop-that is what I believed a prophecy was supposed to look like."

Half way through and loving it. Had to put down "A Passage to India." Will save that for another time,. . . another time. I've finished!! Surprises around every corner. I kept imaging how Egan might have kept track of the characters, the various periods in their lives, and the connections they had with one another. I would have liked to have that spreadsheet (or diagram or story board). Young and vibrant. Unpredictable. Futuristic ending. How creative!!

The format, with "whispers" in the margins, is unusual and clever but potentially frustrating if you like a typically constructed narrative. Fun historical fiction for those familiar with Boston and particularly Southie.

Turns out my great grandmother traveled from Oklahoma to Kentucky to nurse one of my great uncles who was in an army base there during this epidemic. My grandfather, 12th of 13 and the 13th died, was conscripted into WWI and at 18 years of age was 'on the gangplank' when Armistice was declared. Seems long ago, but no Papa Joyce, no me.

I really enjoyed this book about a small town in Ohio's high school football team and how they accomplished the impossible. The book starts out describing how Lincoln, Ohio was in its 'glory days' when the steel mill was booming and the high school football team was great. Scince then, the town took a hit when the steel mill closed and the Linclon Lions ceased to have the winning spirit. The coach of this football team, Jack Morris, walks into the town's diner to have a cup of coffee on the day before facing the Jacktown Giants, he State Champs for 3 years running. All of the sudden a stranger enters the diner and sits down next to Jack and starts talking to him and introduces himself as Mr. Christopher. He talks to Coach Morris on his situation with playing the Giants an doffers to give a pep talk to the Lions. Jack lets him come that evening after practice. Mr. Cristopher gives a great message about self-confidence, loving eachother, trusting eachother, and playing 'one play at a time.' The next night, the Lions play their hearts out. There is even a surprise at the end, but you have to read the book to find the rest out. This is a great motivational book that applies to all life situations. Everybody should read this book!
