A good book in classic Joseph Ellis style, told through vivid descriptions of critical moments in the subject's life and emphasizing certain themes. Though perhaps not entirely fair in its occasional references to John Adams, the scholarship is sound and well documented in the end notes.

On Hoarders I once saw a man who coped with his wife's tragic, unexpected death by adopting and sacrificing his house to several thousand long-tailed rats. Fortunately, when the Portuguese/Brazilian writer Filinto de Almeida lost his wife -- the groundbreaking Júlia Lopes de Almeida -- his response was more healthy. He wrote a new book of poetry. Composed between 1934 and 1938, the poems collected in Doña Júlia are mostly sonnets. They're not arranged chronologically, but if you check the dates while you read the volume you'll notice the author's trajectory from angry and emotional (I wish I were dead too!) to resigned and philosophical (I hope Brazil will remember you!). For readers new to Portuguese poetry (I count myself in this crowd), Almeida seems a good author to know; clear yet profound, his poetry is easily consumed.

I find it amazing that people can live their lives under the threat that at any time the police can knock on their door and take them away for a real or imagined crime. How awful. Hmmm...although today, that's how most of us work....at any time we could be laid off with no reason. How unproductive. Okay, not EXACTLY the same but still. Anyway, a good read.
