I teeter on 3 or 4 stars. I hesitated to read a memoir about a rape but the begining had sucked me in in a car crash sort of way. Her story of how she tried so hard to cope and was not very successful at first was so real and sad yet still inspiring knowing where her path eventually led--successful author. I teeter because I think it interested me more because she was a succesful author and it was her story than it would have if she was just any one else.

As with the first three Becky finds herself in a slew of mishaps, not all of which are her shopping habit. Easy read that moves fast, even for a 400 page novel. I do however have the same complaints as the previous novels. Becky is made out to look like she's in the wrong constantly, when in face I think many of the times she should not be the one taking all of the flak. Luke, as per usual, is a bore and I wonder why Becky loves him so much. Despite the complaints, I definitely would recommend the novel.

To me, this kind of balance between popular and "literary" fiction is an art in and of itself. A great book to read on the plane. I picked it up in Heathrow Airport on my way to India. The clerk sized me up at the register and told me I'd love it. I thought it was really imaginative and well written while telling an exciting adventure story. There are flaws certainly. What I liked about it most about it was that while telling a story that captures our imagination, it reflects on literature and fiction and the power it holds over the reader, but not an overly serious way. It's a book about curiousity, which is why I read adventure stories. Someone on here said it's what Borges would have written if he wrote bestsellers, and I kind of feel it's a little like Calvino bestseller. This was a fun read.

I was surprised to see how many poor reviews this book received as I really liked it. Would put it on my "Best of 2008" list.

** spoiler alert ** An excellent short story that's had me thinking it over for weeks now. It's difficult to review without giving spoilers as part of the charm is working your way through the world laid out by Nigel Edwards but here goes:

I won this book from Goodreads, First Reads a few weeks ago. I was in the middle of Pillars of the Earth, so wanted to wait until I was done with that to delve into this. Interesting book. It was a little bit scattered, but once you got your head around all of the characters and a bit of the backtracking within the story, it was pretty good. I feel a little let down by the ending. I really enjoyed the whole Ka-Pow crew, and wished they would have had a stronger presence in the book and had not turned out the way they did in the end. Benny's character was a bit annoying to me. Be seemed to really not mature in the book the way I think he should have. I feel the same about him at the end as I did at the beginning, confused and wary. Some things were just strange and didn't make sense to me - I didn't really get Monique's character, or Solito. Solito just didn't seem developed enough. Overall a good, quick read!

so, my boyfriend recommended this read. he LOVED it when he read it, and has been telling me to read it for about a year now... so maybe it was all the hype and build up... it made the book bigger than life. don't get me wrong, i liked this book. thus the 3 stars. i just didn't love the book. that's all. and i almost think that if i were maybe still in my early 20's i would have loved it. maybe i would have found it gritty and edgy and the hero maybe more tragic. mostly, i felt sad for the hero of this tale. all that said, i think you should give it a read. its about a killer. not a hardcore, psychopath villain. a guy, who, due to unfortunate circumstance, ends up killing a guy. instead of being demonized and sent to jail, the community cheers his choice to shoot and kill. and then he is sought out for further killings, becoming a killer for hire. i suspect part of the reason my boyfriend loves this book so much is that maybe he could envision himself landing a contract killing job. not because he's a psychopath, but, admittedly, its kind of a romantic tragic hero tale... like batman or hamlet. and i actually really enjoyed this storyline. what dragged the story down for me was the focus on his tumultuous relationship with his girlfriend. i just found that i didn't care. but i suppose it made his life more 3-dimensional, gave more context for where his life went and why. so, again, give it a read. don't let me cloud your judgment.

Really loved this. Unusual in terms of its conception and style; it really hooked me. Although it is an action packed thriller there was something very personal and emotional about the story: I almost felt as if by reading it I had been let into a secret. The chacacters are well drawn, especially Valda and the author weaves the theme of fate and freewill expertly through the book. Lots of quirky characters add colour and there is the odd laugh as well.

This is a wonderful, wonderful summary of the Islamic view on the stages of life. Life is divided into five parts: life before conception, life in this world, life in the grave, life on the Day of Judgement, and life in the fire and the garden. This book is dense. It can be read quickly, but it's the kind of book that makes you want to pause and wipe away a few tears after a page or two. It is very concise, and is a great reminder of the nature of this life (ahem, temporary) and the lives to come, God willing. I highly reccomend it for everyone.
