Too much romance and not enough tearing limb from limb for my tastes, although a little romance isn't a bad thing.

an incredible book that apparently nobody else has read. a captured princess! villianous birds! secret tunnels in a castle and a cast of odd conspirators and enemies. and it all starts on a school bus...the edition i read is out of print now, and i can't find my copy, but this'll do.

First hand account from the white journalist who covered Biko's movement and had to flee South Africa with the manuscript of this book. As with all autobiographies, the hero comes off a little too virtuous to be true, but it's it's a good chronicle of how Biko became Biko and a must read for understanding modern South African politics.

I don't have anything interesting to say about One Hundred Years of Solitude. My reviews tend to be on the long side (by the standards of this site), but it suffices to say that this is pretty much the best novel I've ever read.

Althought Lance is not a writer, this story is a great motivator.

This book has accomplished something that most books avoid. I feel like it has a middle and that's it. There is no defined beginning because the end is in the beginning and the final page is not a trypical PA Cadence... not a bang but a whimper. Quite a feat to accomplish as a writer and I commend Eggers for being so human. Isn't life vey similar. Rarely do things end or begin in a bang and I wonder if it is the middle that really matters? Is it the performance at Carnegie or the thousands of hours spent perfecting the fingerings and phrasing? Is it the black belt or the bruises that got you there? (more that I learned later)

Based on only this novel, I decided A.S. Byatt was one of the greatest underrated novelists of the 20th century. (After reading much more of her work, I still think that.) She has crafted a passionate and exciting literary mystery about the lives of two fictional Victorian poets. That basic skeleton of a story is packed with A) examples of both their poetry, which is so well-written it could entirely stand on its own, but which in this novel serves to provide the reader with clues to the mystery, and which tells you everything you need to know if you read it closely; and B) an equally compelling plot where two literary scholars studying the two poets embark on a wild-goose chase across England and France to try and solve the mystery and eventually (of course) fall in love. It would not be an exaggeration to say that I think this is one of the most perfectly-crafted novels in the history of novels.

Wow! How wonderful that society has changed. The attitudes of "class" reminded me of high school cliches. Writing styles have changed too. I would have liked more description in some chapters. I still enjoyed this book.
