I got to try one of his recipes a few summers ago...it was something with boysenberry and ricotta, perhaps? Anyway, beautiful illustrations and text again.

Pet Shop of Horrors is a manga by Matsuri Akino. It is set in the heart of Chinatown. Enter Count D's pet shop, a place where you can find a multitude of pets. These pets can range from cats and dogs to the most exotic, but they often will take a form to match a person's deepest desires. The mysterious man running the shop will be willing to sell you these animals, but under contract. These contracts often have three terms, varying with each individual pet. If any of these circumstances are broken, the pet shop is in no way, shape, or form, responsible for the consequences that would result. This series is certainly a unique read. Each chapter often focuses on a different customer, so the series has an episode like feel to it. In each of these chapters, however, there is a sub plot that always occurs. This subplot is actually part of the main story, so it's suggested that you pay attention to it. Most of these stories can turn out somewhat messy, but are they happy or sad endings? No one can even tell. This story is about human nature itself, with a good amount of environmentalism hidden in there too.

I had high hopes after finishing the recent Dresden Files novel, Ghost Story which has a plug for this series at the end… I’m not sure why I found the story disappointing; it may be because the heroes and villains were so very black and white, or it may be because I find Bucher’s depiction of politicking to be blunt, awkward and rather unbelievable, or it may just be that Butcher’s still figuring out how to use the third-person voice. Of course, I had trouble getting into the Dresden novels as well, so I will probably keep reading. The story itself is quite action-packed with a number of different strands. It all starts with Tavi and his uncle Bernard tramping out to collect the sheep that Tavi “forgot” to bring in the night before. Their straight-forward task is interrupted by a marat (a non-human race that have a history of trying to conquer the Calderon valley). Meanwhile, back at home a conclave of stead-holders is gathering in order to determine the guilt of one of their number in what may be a capital case, and tempers are hot. Tavi’s aunt, Isana, is to be the judge, but is having trouble controlling the situation. Separately from all this cursor-in-training (a kind of spy with magic) Amara has discovered that her mentor, Fidelias, is a traitor to the crown and has been sent speeding to Calderon valley to spike his plans. Add a dash of magically dangerous weather and shake well.

Nothing too special about this book. Along the same lines as "Julie & Julia" but not as good. The writing is just ok-- it's the story of a woman who's husband loses his job and so she turns her cake making hobby into a business. She bakes cakes to get through hard experiences in life, and how every diff. type of cake represents a different type of comfort. Recipes in the back.

Pouty teenager who thinks everybody is a phony. The stream of consciousness narrative may be pioneering, but the protagonist is not very likable. :P

Simply delightful [also realistic] glimpse into lives of group of retired friends in Wales and England. Their trials and tribulations, underlying anxieties and jealousies.

I read this book at the recommendation of a professor while I was studying in Prague. He taught a class called the "Culture of Dissent" and when I mentioned that I enjoyed reading, he brought in this book for me. I enjoyed reading the different character's reactions and feelings towards the books they were reading. I had read all the books the women read in the book, and enjoyed gaining a completely different perspective on them. It was extremely interesting to me to learn about the life of a woman in Iran and opened my eyes to the incredible social injustice there.

This was a great book! I listened to the audio and the reader was fantastic. Forrest is the son of the Ravenmaster at the Tower of London. There are some really interesting facts about the time period and the story was easy for me to become involved in.

So old-school English literature is really not my bag. Maybe because I'm a Gemini and we like things new (the lamest excuse, I know). Of course, I think if I knew enough about it to make educated choices (and it started showing up on the "New Releases" fiction wall at the BPL), I could really dig this stuff. Which is to say, I enjoyed "Room With A View." I do enjoy the whole detached-social-commentary thing (more contemporary example I enjoyed: "The Last Resort," by Carmen Posadas). My only complaint is how the first portion of the book DRAGS. He narrates that whole portion with the sort of vague, discreet politesse that I think he's also using to critique certain characters (if that's not too meta). Truth be told, there were a handful of times when I wasn't sure who had said what to who, or what exactly had actually happened. But there's a sly humor even in that first portion that I really enjoyed. He was interested in the sudden friendship between women so apparently dissimilar as Miss Bartlett and Miss Lavish... Miss Lavish he believed he understood, but Miss Bartlett might reveal unknown depths of strangeness, though not, perhaps, of meaning.
