"The idea of a dangerous fiction, which one might bring to an analysis of DeLillo's novels, has in Mao II become an expressed element of his plot." from: http://www.nytimes.com/books/97/03/16...

Interesting premise of what happens when a random person at a barbecue hits another person's child. However, the book is only loosely about this event, and is more character examination of different people who were present at the time of the slap. I liked the in depth look at different people, but the "slap" incident was over and done with and completely irrelevant by about 1/2 way through the book. There were also a lot of references to drugs, sex, and infidelity that were pretty graphic at times and seemed a bit over the top--that every single character would be involved with these issues. Good writing but didn't love the book.

Both the movie and the book make me cry uncontrollably.

I love books like these because these kind of books tell true stories of teens that have experienced certain things that made an impact in their life

I really enjoyed the first few chapters of this one, and I also thought the main characters were very interesting. But if it wasn't for those two things, I may not been able to finish it. I liked the writing style, and at times it was easy to get lost in Dahlquist's original story. But then I'd have to stop and try to remember which of the overly-large cast of minor characters had just shown up, and which barely hinted-at subplot he or she belonged to. Or I'd have to figure out if the latest point-of-view jump had also skipped me backwards in time a bit (one time shift in the most action-heavy part of the story came off really badly). I don't mean to give the impression that the entire book was this much work, but it happened often enough to be discouraging. I'm rarely one to complain that a book has too much action in it, but the constant chases and fights and captures and escapes started to seem much too repetitive after page 600 or so. I'll be reading the next one soon, but since some of the conspiracies were cleared away, I'm hoping that it won't be as distracting to follow.

good for anyone interested in symbols of power, monarchy, japan, or many other things for that matter. amazing descriptions and analyses of why and how the emperorship and various rituals of "tradition" were created. leaves you wondering, and not quite satisfied, as to why japan chose to form a constitutional monarchy instead of following the path of the american or french revolutions. concentrating too much on rupture, this book denies continuities that it is a stretch to ignore (eg the long history of ceremonial legitimation on the part of the imperial family for any political institution)

This book would have received 1 star if it hadn't been for his final, anticipated and amazing chapters on running the ultramarathon. Skip all the parts about bugs and animals and get to the running stuff.
