The second book in the trilogy of prequels to the Pendragon series proves to be even better than the first! This book follows the stories of Aja Killian from Veelox, Elli Winter from Quillan, and Alder from Denduron. When a strange program attacks the core of Lifelight in Rubic City, Aja is blaimed. However, she knows she is innocent and also knows the person who designed the program. The only way to clear her reputation is to play the boy's game...and to win. Will Aja succeed or will she be thrown out of the academy for phaders forever? Elli Winter lives on Quillan, a gloomy territory ruled solely by the menacing power of Blok, a company that has taken over this world. When Elli falls into a construction hole filled with a vortex of mud and water, she finds herself in a warehouse filled with strange people who call themselves the revivers. These people collect pieces of Quillan's past before Blok and plan to one day rise up and overthrow this all-powerful company. Elli's knack for knowing where artifacts are buried proves very useful on the excavations. When Elli and her team go on an unauthorized excavation, based on her gut feeling, security robots, called dados, find them. Will Elli survive and find the important artifact she believes she is looking for. Or will the dados take it and have it destroyed forever? Alder wants nothing more than to be a Bedoowan knight, the knights who protect the lesser village people, the Milagos, who mine for a mineral called glaze deep in the mines. However, at the academy, the master heaps him with endless chores and does not allow him to train. Alder is an orphan and has no money to pay the academy fees. When he meets a strange old man willing to train him, Alder leaps at the chance. Through his training he learns about the unfair treatment of the Milago that was hidden from him. Will Alder follow his destiny and become both a knight and a Traveler? Or will his efforts fail? This novel is filled with even more suspense than the first one. The Travelers: Book Two is far superior to its predecessor and also a great read.

The Battle of the Labyrinth is all about the quest that Annabeth, together with her companions, Percy, Tyson and Grover take in the Labyrinth, a giant maze full of unpredictable and highly fatal dangers. They entered the Labyrinth with the knowledge that Luke plans on destroying Camp Half-Blood, and they were afraid he might succeed on this because of the path he found to the camp through the Labyrinth. I love the inspiration of this book. I like mazes, and I just love the Labyrinth! Though I must say, I expected more monsters from it. And I wanted Percy and his friends to actually slay some monsters in there. And I would have loved a greater array of weapons. But I love the monsters that Percy and company faced in the Labyrinth. Perhaps, my favorite Labyrinth monster is the Sphinx. And I love the cover of this book! It’s my favorite among the others in this series. I love that friendship is always a ruling theme in the Percy Jackson books. It resembles the Harry Potter series that way, and I love that semblance between them. And in this book, it was surprising to see one thing change. The “romantic improvements” in this book are a pleasant surprise! Other revelations surprised me as well! The twists in this novel are quite unpredictable, and they amaze me. I can’t help but compare it to the Harry Potter series, but in HP, the reader can clearly sense Harry growing up. The story started when he was a child, and the narration was with the innocence of a child. And as he grew up, things became darker, some feelings became more vivid. But in the PJ series, I can’t sense Percy growing up. He remains a child to me. So I was really shocked with the “romantic improvements,” because I felt that he wasn’t ready yet for those. The beginning of this novel is, as usual in Rick’s writing style, quite boring, especially since the beginning is redundant. It’s the same as in the Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters. I let it go in the Sea of Monsters, because the scene with the Laestrygonians was pretty cool, but I got bored pretty quickly with the scene in the Battle of the Labyrinth. The empousa was a boring opponent. There are also scenes that are easy to picture, and I have observed that Rick is good with forming beautiful pictures in the minds of the readers. But he’s not as good in describing battle scenes, and other not-so-pretty stuff. In the Titan’s Curse, Zoe’s past was easy to imagine because it’s beautiful. In this novel, Ogygia and Calypso were easy to imagine because they were lovely. But Geryon? I cannot imagine. The fight scene with Antaeus? I couldn’t picture very well, too. By the way, I love the chapter entitled “A Permanent Vacation” because of Calypso. Riordan gave so much life to Calypso’s character. He gave color to her, and because of that I loved Rick as an author more. I loved Calypso more as a fictional character, too. I like the new parts of Annabeth’s personality that were revealed in this book. I love how some of the mysteries about her were solved. I really need to salute Rick Riordan for his skill in making complex characters that have real personalities. As usual, there was a scene in this novel where I almost cried. It was so moving that tears pooled in my eyes. I think it’s an important lesson that Rick wants to tell his readers: even if a man has sinned a lot, he always has a chance in redemption, depending on the choices that he will make and the acts that he will do. I think that Sea of Monsters is the best book so far in the PJ series, but I can’t tell if it’s my favorite yet, because I still have yet to read The Last Olympian. The Battle of the Labyrinth promises so much to happen in the Last Olympian, and I can’t wait to know how the war with Kronos plays out. Rick Riordan is a wonderful writer. This series has an amazing plot, but I do think that he needs a little improvement in the description department. But that doesn’t prevent me from giving his books five-star reviews. And so, I’m giving another five stars to The Battle of the Labyrinth. It is a very enjoyable read! I love how the story progressed in this novel that easily captivates me and lures me in its magical world.
