Disclaimer: Some of my friends will not enjoy the language in this book. There is quite a bit of gratuitous cursing. I loved this book. I enjoyed hearing a book from the perspective of a dog! I had never read anything quite like this...except animal farm...I feel in love with this pooch and his commentary on the Swift family. The life of this dog encompasses many phases of the family including marriage, kids, changes, altercations, and death. Enzo brings unconditional love into the world and helps his family make good choices, fight for the truth, and live a full life. I could go on and on with my review...but in short...this book is amazing and I love it.

We learned a lot about George Washington: He liked to ride horses, He fought in a war, how he became our first president, he liked math, and he was a mapmaker.

** spoiler alert ** I really liked this book as a teenager, but as an adult I have the same issues with it that I had with Wuthering Heights and the Twilight books. While they are very entertaining in that exciting, dark, mysterious way, they are all about selfish love. People that hurt or endanger others because they are "just so in love" with the other person. In my opinion that simply shows that they are more in love with themselves. I also wanted to throttle the timid little no-name main character. She is so timid and swept about. The worst though is that when Maxim tells her that he killed Rebecca, she doesn't think, "That is horrible. What kind of monster did I marry? He killed someone, even if she was evil." She thinks, "He didn't love Rebecca!" somehow validating his love for her. What!? It's one of those books though that makes murder seem so justifiable.

This was one of my favorite books the year I was 12. (My very favorite - from age 12 on - was probably To Kill A Mockingbird.) The book was a Christmas present that year. I reread it multiple times, and have reread it periodically over the years. It was unique for its time, of telling a story about Native Americans where they weren’t portrayed as perfect or as evil, but simply as human beings. I still have my original very worn copy. Just checked and it is in print and that's great because it’s a terrific story. It’s about a nine year old girl and her five year old sister and how, after their family is killed by members of a tribe of Comanche Indians, they’re kidnapped and adopted as members by different families in the tribe. The story is told from the older girl’s viewpoint. It’s a real epic as her story, and that of the tribe, is followed well into her early adulthood. Both the characters and plot are very well developed in this book. It’s the book that sparked my interest in Native American history.

Lots of information packed into pictures and short paragraphs. It gets the job done.
Our review can also be read at: http://gonepecanla.wordpress.com/2011... Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life…and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely. Favorite Quote: When fighting clowns, go for the juggler. Two things sold me on reading this book. One, the cover. Hello look at the shoes!! How awesome are they?!?! Two, the blurb from JR Ward. Have you read the Black Dagger Brotherhood books? (Because you should, whew.) Charley has been able to see and communicate with dead people since she was born. She calls herself the grim reaper; helping lost souls cross over and solving a few crimes along the way through the local PD as a private investigator. Sometimes crime solving and helping the recently departed are one in the same. Enter Charley’s uncle Bob and possible frenemy/love interest/skip tracer Garrett Swopes. Charley also seems to be extremely accident prone (something I completely understand) and has a daily dose of life threatening action. Oh and let’s not forget the man of her dreams, literally, Mr. Hot aka Reyes Farrow. He seems to be able to enter her dreams to ** cough, cough** have a little “fun”. Some people don’t like to compare books to others but I am a fan of it, especially when it is a new series someone wants me to read. If I had to compare this book to another I would say its very much Stephanie Plum meets the Ghost Whisperer (even though I was never a fan of the show, I like this book ). It is the first book in a series but self contained enough that you could read it as a standalone (same as Plum), but who doesn’t want to know what Charley does next?? God knows I need to know what is going to happen with Reyes. Charley also has the same thing as Plum with two different guys, though I do like Charley more than Stephanie here because as of right now she is obviously leaning towards one and not the other. (THANK YOU!!!) Definite laugh out loud moments along with a sassy lead character who says several things most women would never say, at least not out loud or in public. This was great quick read with funny moments mixed in the light hearted action. Only real complaint about the book is I felt like I was starting book two of a series, not the first one. It almost felt like I missed something in the beginning of the book and sometimes I had to think about who each character was in a certain scene. Other than that, bring on book 2 [currently in my “to be read” pile ]!!!! But the good, (REYES, whew) DEFINITELY outweigh that. Pecans: 3/5
