A gutsy endeavour, but I think it is an experiment I would not try to do if my child would want to quit school. I just hope that he won't want that, it will go against my know-it-all, school-loving self and I just do not know how I would cope with that. But the book is educational on a certain level. And fairly enjoyable.

No matter what you think about the war-you should read this book. It is riveting and made me think. It has been described as one of the best books ever written on the modern military, and I can see why. There is a good amount of military-speak, but the authors have a glossary that helps you through. If you know anyone in the military, or are concerned about what the hell is going on over there, read this book.

I think I could have done without this one. I liked the writing, but found the characters immensely frustrating. And the ending - oh! - absolutely awful. Just skip the last 30 pages if you do decide to read this one.

Okay, I was looking for something to read that would just be easy and quick and this was definitely it. I found myself skimming the last 100 pages and didn't miss much because there is not much of a story other than the main character Rebecca Bloomwood is pathetic. She is kind of funny--but pretty pathetic. There are some "f" bombs in this book so beware. I haven't seen the movie yet but just by watching the trailer I think the movie might be better than the book. When does that happen? Rating--PG-13

I hate to admit it, but "Slobodan Milošević" is really the only thing I remember from the Siege of Sarajevo when it actually happened. And the only reason that name stuck with me is that I was a DJ at a campus radio station during that time and I never knew how to pronounce the guy's name. The events that are described in this book -- events that occurred during my lifetime -- are events I didn't even notice happening. I'm sure this book will be compared to Maus, another graphic novel describing wartime events. Horrific wartime events. I think one possible weakness of the graphic novel format is that images are so strong. An image slides into your mind very differently from words. The best stories make the pictures in your mind by building them up from little words. When you make your own images, they are a part of you, and so have much stronger emotions attached. A graphic novel always runs the risk that the images in the book aren't as good as those the reader's imagination can produce. This book shows just the right amount of imagery for me: enough to be a catalyst for my imagination, but not so much as to replace my imagination's role as image-maker. I'm glad I read this book, to know what happened in those years when I was busy studying. Telling the story of one family's experiences and focusing almost exclusively on their need to get out was very effective. I'm going to read some more books about the Siege of Sarajevo now.

This would really be a 3.5 star book for me. It is an interesting story about two teenage sisters in high society New York in the late 1800's. The characters were at times pretty snooty but it was a fun easy read. I'm excited to start the next in the series.
