"Lord knows at least I was there. And I'm here. I'm still here. Look who's here!" (insane applause.) Sadly, I was not there when the original production of Follies marked the end of what many consider the Golden Age of the Broadway musical. I recoil at such dramatic declarations, and yet...there is some truth to them. Ted Chapin was lucky enough to be a gofer/production assistant and "observer" during the rehearsal process of Follies, and thirty years later he offers this classy but juicy memoir about his experiences. Time and distance add weight to what was once a journal-turned-paper (he was a junior in college at the time), and I relished the great stories in this book from start to finish. I only wish Chapin could have written this book *after* the recent (Feb 07) concert version at City Center, which was mind-blowing. I'd love to know what he thought of it!

If you were to pick up this book with no expectations, you would be greatly disappointed. 90% of the book is pictures, photographs loosely divided into categories to show item is use. The remaining 10% covers the inspiration and use of the book, with the author's interpretations of the earlier photographs. Where this book shines is when you approach it in need of inspiration. When you are lacking in new ideas, a quick glance through this book can grant you a new look on the world we interact with, not just by examples within the pages themselves (which are, on their own, open to interpretation beyond what the author gives at the back) but also in your day to day life. I found myself noticing lots of "thoughtlesss acts" the afternoon after going through this, acts I would have otherwise ignored. The examples highlight the small ways in which people mis-use the environment around them, or more accurately use it for purposes it was not intended for. By presenting a collection of clear and not so clear examples, it trains your mind to notice these events on your own. I would not say this is a book you should rush out and buy. Have a look at the thoughtless acts website, borrow it from someone or grab a copy from the library, but unless you really want a copy on hand it is not really required. A useful book for the occasional reference, and good for getting you thinking about the way things are designed, but not a "must read" ( or view, for the photographs I guess).

This is an amazing testimonial of what it is like to live on a reservation in America as a Native American. Alexie has a way of capturing the absolute truth about life as an Indian on the "Rez"

ETA: Re-read 1/09/12. New comments in italics This was a very strange reading experience for me. See Laddie trying to keep an open mind: Things were not as strange this time around but I did have to fight against preconceived notions from my first read. I jumped into the fray Sylvester Stallone style with guns blazing and grenades strapped to my belt. The beginning of the book almost did me in. It felt like pages and pages of inner dialogue. What I disliked about the inner dialogue was that I felt as if there was a lot of telling where things could have been shown. I didn't feel as if I was discovering things about these characters as the story went along. It was pretty much all laid out and that kept me from feeling like there was anything new to discover about Griff and Dante. See Laddie trying not to roll her eyes: Griff is that friend in highschool who's had a crush on the same guy since freshman year. He talks about it incessantly, never does anything about it, writes "Griff + Dante 4ever" over and over in his notebook, and listens to Love Song by The Cure all day. What kept me from abandoning this book was that there were pockets of excellent writing and imagery. I expected that and was not disappointed. See Laddie applaud: The excellent writing is still excellent...but all of the sound effects killed me dead. Lubba-dubba ding dong dilly winkly wink wink tinkle. What's that sound? The sound someone's eyelashes make when they blink. The porn site plot was something that I did not love. It seemed out of place when coupled with the 9/11 theme. There were so many things in this book that were on the intense side; 9/11, gay bashing, the pain of unrequited love and dealing with an alcoholic parent. Next to all of the seriousness, the porn plot was like a sore thumb. Perhaps the Hot Heads scenes were supposed to amp up the intensity but when put next to the other issues in the story the whole porn thing came up short for me. See Laddie go bow chicka waa waaaa: The porn plot still sticks out but I will admit that it's sexier the second time around. I struggled with whether or not I felt like this book was romantic. In the beginning I felt like it was far from romantic. While it was far from romantic I did feel like there was a certain gritty authenticity. As the story progressed the tone changed and had more of a romantic feel. It was half of a romance. Romance lite. Overall, the book was worth the time it took to read it. I was never exactly invested in Griff and Dante's relationship but I was curious to see how they would come together. I was looking forward to this book and while it was a different experience than what I expected, it was definitely worth the time it took to read it. See Laddie give this book 3.5 stars: This was half a star better now that I've re-read it. Yeah, Griff had about a million "Stellllllaaaaaa! Stellllaaaaa!" moments but I was a little more invested this time. Just like with that friend in highschool with the hopeless crush, I wanted Griff to get his man because watching him pine for Dante was kind of painful. I'll be following Damon Suede's writing because even though this book didn't completely work for me there were some gorgeous moments. I'm interested to see what his next book will be.

This was a great book. I loved the author's style. It started out a little slow, but only a little and definitely worth reading. I have not finished a book in a while and I was eagerly staying awake at night to read it.

This was a book that really changed my life. It was also one of the last things my grandmother ever got me. I remember she expressed confusion over the fact that I was really getting into books of letters. I too am now confused since correspondence now strikes me as generally dull to read. However, I think it's easier to understand when seen in the light that I basically fancied myself IN LOVE with Lord Byron and really wanted to read everything he ever wrote, including the letters which I now find hard to reread because they contain so many dashes. Lord Byron's letters are funny and insightful and a lot better than his poems. I especially like the humor in them which he managed to retain despite having a really eventful, emotional life. He actually comes across as a lot less depressed than his public persona would have him be. They burned Lord Byron's memoirs when he died. This really saddens me. Good stuff.
