*** updated after re-reading *** Of course you've heard it all already - the majesty of the whale (and its whiteness!), the scope of this monstrous book and its formal experimentation, its fathoms-deep themes. I'm certainly not going to recap its plot to you, what little plot there is - whale bites man, man bites whale? But what struck me most on reading Moby Dick again was how the narrative makes its movement, not out of a traditional arc, but out of the confidence of its language; Melville trusts the flexibility of his tone enough that he can take long detours away from the Pequod and into the realms of history and whale anatomy, detours which he makes so fascinating that they only increase our fascination with the story. The key here is the sense of humor: whales are classified as if they are books; a man wears the skin of a whale penis like a jacket; the king of a South Sea island shows our narrator a temple made out of a massive sperm whale skeleton. There's a stubborn tendency in American culture to ossify the classics, but it would be a shame for anyone to approach Moby Dick as if it were a collection of serious themes, seeing as they might miss the way irony sings between the cracks of practically every sentence - page long parodies of academic texts, speeches mocking Emersonian transcendentalism. And when the great themes do emerge, their tragedy is sharpened because they tip the tone on which we've come to rely into a darker position. It's only an inch or so from satire to total nihilism, after all. Maybe more than anything else, Moby Dick is an argument for risk, evidence that you can stretch the fabric of language long past the accepted length without breaking the narrative line. A good reminder that narrative is composed of language, and not the other way around, and excellent evidence the next time some asshole tries to tell you the importance of structure/coherence/a page limit in your aspirations to novel-dom.
