High school girl lusts after vampire in this Austen/Bronte wannabe. Kind of like girl-porn. And I was even willing to give a vampire hero a chance.

In these stories Joel Lane gives us some wonderfully pitch-perfect dark urban fantasy/horror. While his prose isn't as poetic as M. John Harrison's and his characterization lacks the psychological plumb-bob of J. G. Ballard, Lane excels in settings, all of which are dark and dangerous and unreal, and the subtle, often grotesque plot twists.

Book #89 of 2009 Another cute book from Cindy Miles. I enjoy the "medieval warrior meets charming American woman and falls in love" theme. A couple of minor things bothered me. One, it seemed for much of the book, despite Ellie being "mostly dead" and needing to find her mortal body... it didn't seem like they did a whole lot of searching for her. They'd go out during the day, maybe talk to someone at the bookshop, and then it would be night and, apparently, too late to do anything else. And we never did find out what really happened to Ellie. How did she end up on Grimm land? Aargh! Still though, it was a fun light read.

The Kings in Winter reminded me of why I've never been a huge fan of the prolific Cecelia Holland's historical fiction, whose work I'd tried a long time ago. I'm sure the setting and research were impeccable and there was definitely a sense that this was the way people really lived in eleventh century Ireland, but I just didn't like anyone in the story enough to care about what happened to them. I did like Aud, the wife of the main character Murtagh, and the scenes of domesticity that I found to be quite charming, but alas, the book was much more about Murtagh and his relationships to the kings of the title (Brian Boru, and the two rival kings of Munster and Leinster.) The scenes set amidst the Vikings who had come to fight against Brian were interesting, but they came at a point that was well over the halfway mark of the book, and I had trouble figuring out who was who and moreover, didn't particularly care. I'm still interested in reading more by Cecelia Holland, but I'm afraid my earlier judgment may still stand.

A classic. I have read this book many, many times, and in many ways I prefer it to the more popular Anne Rice novels (although I'm a huge fan of "Interview," "Lestat" and "Queen"). I've never really delved into the historical signifigance of the novel in terms of sexual repression/expression in the Victorian era, and am currently looking for a good book of criticism specifically about "Dracula."

I had to put it in my favorites, but always with a bit of hesitation. I was hooked from the very first line and its bitter taste of almonds yet at times the descriptions seemed to get in the way. Still, it is one of my favorite books.
