my sister gave this book to me for Christmas one year. It was probably one of the best presents I've ever received. Such a great book; it is well-written, thoughtful, and entertaining. One of my favorites.

This book provided a first person account of the author's investigation of the different 'food chains' that provide us food. He looked at the mainstream industrial food chain that provides most food in the US, focusing in particular on the key role that corn plays in processed food (high fructose corn syrup, etc). He also looked at 'big organic' and little or 'beyond organic' food chains. His descriptions of different organic farms he visited was very interesting. He also describes a meal he more or less provided for himself through hunting, gardening, and foraging. Along the way he explores some of the history of food production, corn cultivation, and the philosophical under pinning of vegetarianism and the eponymous omnivore's dilemma. It's very good book and I strongly recommend to anyone who's interested about food, health, and effects of public policy on how and what we eat. My only complaints is that the writing is occasionally pedantic and at times a bit too technical (for me). It could've been edited tighter - it probably could've been 50 pages shorter and lost little substance.

oh, one of my all time favorites. i LOVE when they wish the cat could talk and since it is half-magic, the cat's every other word is "meow." i bought this (and the rest of the series) for my niece for christmas a couple of years ago, and i can't wait until my daughters are old enough to read it.
