** spoiler alert ** 4 1/2 stars. Second book in Ms. Mead's Vampire Academy series. This was a great book- and I mean overall- not just for a young adult book. This book has a fair amount of character development, as well as adding characters to the overall story arc. The plot was good, and in my opinion, believable for this type of genre. The Strigoi have started attacking in groups (which is unheard of) and using humans to break wards (also unheard of). So, St. Vladmir makes their annual after-Christmas ski trip mandatory- for students and guardians (and any family that decides to accompany their kids). Rose’s mother is there guarding her Moroi, Lord Szelsky, so there is some pretty comical interaction between those two. Rose is in love with a guardian, and her tutor, Dimitri. However, she is dating Mason. Lissa is pretty safe in this Vampire Academy installment and gets very cozy with her boyfriend Christian. Actually, she has made friends with, Adrian Ivashkov, a fellow “spirit” user. Tasha Ozar (Christian’s aunt) stirs up a debate on whether or not the Moroi should fight alongside their guardians and use offensive magic to attack the Strigoi. In that spirit, Mason, Eddie (two novice guardians), and Mia (a Moroi) leave the slopes and go to Spokane, Washington where the Strigoi attackers have been rumored to hold up at. Rose realizes this, and decides to go and bring them back herself (since she is the one who told Mason that information- even though Dimitri told her that information in confidence). Christian finds and accompanies Rose. They find their fellow student, and Rose convinces them to return with them when they are attacked and kidnapped by a group of humans. They are then held as prisoners of Isaiah and Elena (two Strigoi) for about two days. They break their way out- Christian uses his fire magic to burn off Rose’s constraints. Rose tells Mason that if anything happens to get everyone out and she will try her best to slow down Isaiah and Elena. Of course, Isaiah and Elena come out; Mason gets everyone out, but then returns to help Rose. Isaiah twists (breaks) Mason’s neck and he dies. Rose, with much difficulty, beheads Isaiah and Elena with a very old and dull sword that was on display on the wall (with Mia’s help, she creates a distraction- burst the fish tank [water is her magic:]). Rose after her first two Strigoi kills goes into shock and won’t let anyone near Mason’s body, until Dimitri arrives on the scene and finally gets through to her. Rose has a hard time adjusting to her first Strigoi kills. She doesn’t eat or sleep well. Even though Strigoi are evil, it is still killing, and apparently all novices/guardians have a very hard time with their first kill. Adrian (who is not an actual Academy student) decides (at the end of the book) to stay at the Academy and works with Lissa and her “spirit” instructor, Ms. Carmack. Rose receives her first two molnija marks (lightening shaped x’s that are tattooed on the back of each guardian’s neck- one for each Strigoi kill). She doesn’t get the “promise mark” which is a tattoo Rose (and the other guardians) will receive after their graduation.
