The Eucharist, at least for those in the "high church" traditions, is kind of a big deal. Just how big of a deal is, of course, a matter of debate. Roman Catholics hold to what is called Transubstantiation, the belief that the bread and the wine become the actual body and blood of Jesus. Lutheran and Reformed churches have different understandings, as do Anglicans. Many nondenominational evangelicals consider it more symbolic, and pass the stale crackers and Welch's grape juice accordingly, maybe once a month. In this book Gallagher, herself Episcopalian, doesn't focus too much attention on what is actually happening to the bread and the wine. Rather, she focuses on what is happening to and among people. I like this, because for something like the Lord's Supper – which Christ commands his disciples to do in remembrance of him, the God who took on real flesh and blood – locking the sacrament in an air-tight theological box with Is dotted and Ts crossed strikes me as a bit like missing the point. - See more at: http://tjhoiland.com/wordpress/2011/0...

This was one of the worst books I've ever read, and I read a lot. Its shittiness is only made worse by the fact that so many people think it's the best book ever. Sick.

I learned that Steve Martin can write a pretty good book. Light and quick with substance. Funny, and even thoughtful. Recommended for reading on the el or while waiting at the doctor's office.

I still unable to grasp the fact that Arthur Golden is not from Japan, yet he was able to depict its 19th century society as if he was. enjoyable.

I stumbled across this book as an audio that was also read by Maya Angelou, and didn't realized that it was the last of her six books. I thought there was some interesting parts and learned somethings that I didn't know, but she spoke as an established figure in the Civil Rights movement, already well known to both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, JR., and I would have liked to have known how she became established in those circles, because at that time she was not yet a writer, but had actually been a singer and dancer, which was news to me.

If I had learned history from good novels and stories of the times I would have retained a lot more of what I was taught. The details of the times increased my awareness of issues of life and the times and the characters were people I could relate to. The brutality and hardship of life as revealed in this story will make my visits to historical places in Europe more filled with fantasies and respect for the achievements of those who built cities, churches and castles. I found it rather long and at times repetitive but it was a good story to hold my interest to the end.
