I read this in the 7th grade, picking it from the classroom shelf for a reading assignment. Except for listening to my mom laugh and read aloud the passage from The Wayward Bus where Alice(?) is plotting against the flies, this may have been my first introduction to Steinbeck. It's a sad story, but for some reason it really got to me.

I prefer reading history to novels but this novel was very well presented. Liked it. Some of the more shocking scenes are completely fiction, still I understand why it was done, for all those novel readers. :) It goes back to the library shelves.

Very mystical and surreal but difficult to follow as many of the characters have the same name! Overall I enjoyed the book and found it engrossing. I will re-read it in the future for further clarity. Saturday, June 27, 2009 Well the future has come. I am in the process of reading this book again. Maybe this time I will receive some clarification. I remember from when I first read it, the book contains elements of the Abstract, Surrealism, Symbolism, and Fantasy. Mr. Marquez has created a unique universe in this book.

A handy guide to the mechanics, ideas, and the way comics work--in comic form, of course. Well done and inventive, McCloud covers a weensy bit of history, how to define comics, and then proceeds to break down art, iconagraphy, storytelling, lay-out, and much more. I was hoping for a guide more on how to read comics--I tend to get caught up just reading the words and ignoring the pictures and wanted some tips on integrated reading of art/words--, but this was a worthwhile read.
