This is amazing. A friend recommended it to me, it's actually Joan Didion's first novel which makes it all the more incredible. A tragic story of a grand old American family in the midst of decline, it's sharp, acutely observed, and really worth reading. Lots of love and death to keep you turning the pages too.

I hate to be mean, but I just couldn't take this book. Had to put it down. I read a recommendation of it, so I picked it up and enjoyed it at first. Historical mixed with a good dose of fantasy, and I wanted to see where it was going. But then it just got silly, so I quit reading it. Kings James put me over the edge. Fantasy is fine, but when you throw in a historical character, they must be believable.

** spoiler alert ** This is a story that called my atention since the very second I read the sinopsis. It's really another world and a fasinating story. I remember it, but I don't rememer all the details, as I've finished it a long time ago so there isn't a lot to say. Just that I recomend it. Let's see, it goes kind of like this: Tally Yougblood really wanted to be a Pretty (sorry if it's not as I say it but I read it in spanish so I hope you get the idea), like Right now. As her Bff Paris had been tured recently in his 16th birthday. One day, during her last week of Uglie, she was so desperate that she decided to take a trip no the city where the Bubble-heads were. (I mean, as I said it's another world and you... really hae to read it, sorry) Anyway, she goes there to try to see her bff (she was totally alone without friends in Uglyland), who was totally changed and didn't wanted to see her 'till she was a Pretty like him (I hated him there)and when she was getting out of the city she finds a girl called Shay and they befriends quickly. One day, Shat takes Tally to the ruins of.. well let's say a city like we know now, but in ruins that had been used to educate the children in Uglieland about how bad people were before and.. (read the boook for the hole story) Shay tell Tally this amazing story about The Smoke, the one who didn't want to be Pretty and run away to the nature. Her nwe bff wanted Tally to leave with her. But what about Tally's life-time wish, The Perfection? They didn't felt the same way about the operation, for Tally it was everything, but not fot Shay, for her it was kind of the end. When Tally was counting minutes to be another Pretty, she is told to go and find Shay, who was gone into the nature to live in The Smoke. If she didn't come back with her, she'd never be a Pretty. When she finds The Smoke, she finds herself in love with Jared. Would she betray her new best friend and give away all the Smokies just to be a Pretty? And what about Jared, would she betray him too? Does she really want to be a Pretty now?

Every once in a while, I am in the mood for detective fiction, and this one was looking at me in the second-hand bookstore, so I picked it up and started reading it during lunch breaks. Until it got so fascinating that I finished it in one reading session. I have now ordered the other books in this series (this is the fourth Kat Colorado mystery). Looking forward to reading them in sequence!

I enjoyed this series. I finished it and read it again. My opinions about characters were totally different after reading it the second time. There were times when it was a bit inappropriate but overall a quick easy read in a genre I'm not usually a fan of.
