Oh my god. I have never read a YA novel before as intense as this one. It's my first Melina Marchetta book, and sure, I've heard/read a lot of promising reviews about her works, but this was beyond everything I expected. Confudragging for the first few chapters, plus the promise of it being a looong read, but hold on. It's going to be all worth it. And yes, the narrative is a bit too grown-up for my taste but that might just be because you and I've grown so accustomed to hearing American YA character voices. Read some more and you'll realize it's really very beautifully written, so forget that previous sentence. And Marchetta surely knows how suspense works with plot, because chapter by chapter, her story goes from wtf is this to WHOA WAIT to FUUUUU to pausing for a while to reflect on the awesomeness that just hit you because that's how affecting the story is. I don't want to give away anything more because this is one of those kind of books that I'd like very much for my fellow readers to fully experience as it is on their own, but lemme just say that I am definitely stacking up on some more Marchetta books, and Aussie YA novels, at that.

Though it is not a young adult novel, per se, it reminded a lot of other YA books in the Rick Riordan vein with gods, mythical creatures, etc., with more character development and better pacing. Entertaining and fast paced read. If you like urban fantasy I would check it out.

This guy is good at what he does. Little Children is surprisingly gripping for a novel about suburbanites who bore themselves and just about everyone around them. I would have read it in one sitting if I'd had the time. There's a lot of good writing here, and I particularly appreciated Perrotta's use of juxtaposition. Authors often annoy me by jumping inexpertly from story line to story line. Perrotta's moved his focus pretty seamlessly without employing cheap transitions. The ending felt a bit contrived, but at least Perrotta saved it from being overly moralistic by slight turn into the unexpected. I also give him credit for having the brains and the guts to end it exactly when he should have without indulging in unnecessary wrap up after the climax.

this true story about a daughter that suffers due to her family and the treatment they recieve from her. Adeline suffers the abuse of her stepmother just because she is the youngest and is defenseless. her father doesn't defend her an she feels that she is not loved. she is alone and only has her aunt baba that rewards and praises her. she feels alone and shares her sad story of ehr life as a unwanted child. She tells us how she was unimportant and her family took no notice for her. she was always infirior and was treated unfairly. this story brought me to tears when she writes about how her duck is killed and that duck was her only friend. the style that it's written in is so vivid and i feel her pain. she writes how she cried and when her duck died she felt so lonely and it made me cry and think about how good i have it. i felt so sorry for her and i wondered how she made it through. i was thankful for the loving family i have and it made me realize that ny life is pretty good compared to what she went through.

reviewed by http://urbanfantasyinvestigations.blo... As others have mentioned this book is not like the cover. The cover is fantastic and one of the big reasons why I picked up the book in the first place, it makes it seem like Sophie is going to be a kick butt fighting chick which isn't the case. The book is light, fun and filled with a fantastic cast of different paranormal creatures. Sophie is the only mortal with the UDA and gets involved in a case with a sexy detective from the mortal world police. She is incredibly guy crazy and her inner banter can get a little annoying to read but all in all she was a very likable character and it was fun to follow along on her adventure. The plot was engaging, the mystery of the book wasn't predictable, and there is a nice cliffhanger at the end to get you wanting to read the next book in the series when it comes out. I didn't Love it but I enjoyed reading it and will continue the series with UNDER ATTACK when it comes out.

This books is better than I remember - perhaps because I was too young to really get as much out of it the first time I read it! The pace of it somehow feels slow though, despite the fact that it's actually quite short - I did lose interest nearer the beginning, but having persevered, I have to say the second half of the book is much better!
