i was warned before reading this book, which was one of the notoriously banned books of the mid 20th century, that it was violent and offensive. after reading, i believe it may be only midly either of those, but mostly it is incisive, addictive, and some of the most honest and beautiful prose i've ever read.

I read this because I heard they were making a movie about it, looking to capitalize on the success of the Harry Potter franchise. Hence, I read it expecting it to compare to Harry Potter. It didn't. This really is for children, complete with definitions when the author uses large words. I am not saying it is a bad book for children, just that I didn't really like it, as I am not the intended audience.
