My dad loaned me this paperback book, having enjoyed it himself. We both usually read espionage and spy thrillers. So I was surprised that he liked it. And even more surprised that I really liked it too! SPOILERS BELOW .... One of the reasons I stay clear of science fantasy/fiction is that the concept of time travel is usually not credibly done. That's one of the reasons I hesitated in picking up this novel. I like what Crichton did with the "time travel" concept in this story. Actually, via one of the main characters, he explicitly insists that this is NOT time travel. It is travel to alternate universes. And due to the nature of the quantum technology used for this travel, the person in the current universe is actually eliminated ... to be replaced and reconstituted by a different "self" in the alternate universe. Nice try, and a little more credible than other attempts. There were a few inconsistencies that irked. For example, near the end of the story, the mastermind head of the tech firm still does refer to traveling into the past ... which conflicts with the premise that this isn't truly time travel. In addition, the characters were insistent that they couldn't take plastics into the alternate medieval world because that would be anachronistic. Yet they didn't hesitate to take pills in their medicine kits or swiss-army-style knife combos. Minor points; irksome for a bit. As for the story itself, I enjoyed the juxtaposition of the universes and the fact that it wasn't a simple, entirely predictable ending. For me, it was a surprisingly fun read!
