Among other things, what I like about Eugene Peterson's paraphrase of the Bible is his introductions to each book. He does a fine job of putting each book in context and helping me to understand why this ancient history, filled with strange customs and -- at times -- seemingly endless lists of names -- applies to my life today.

Joan De La Haye's 'Shadows' is a well-crafted exploration of a group of damaged characters in South Africa who are involved in a very complicated web of sex, love and murder. The intertwining stories of the characters, as well as the lurking demon's place in the devolution of the main character's psyche, made Shadows a fine page-turner. On the other hand, the prominent inclusion of an incestual storyline was a bit much for me to stomach. While it did help to make the ending be a bit more strong, I feel some of those elements could have been left out. Then again, for a book about 'Shadows' this inclusion did do a fairly good job of having the shadows be reliant on personal, as well as external, demons.

This sincere picture book tells the same type of story as Arthur Miller's screenplay "Playing for Time" in which a person is in the compromising position of playing music for their persecutor (a moral dilemma). It kept them alive but full of guilt. This one has poignant illustrations and beautifully descriptive images in words. This is one of the better picture books about the holocaust--it doesn't hold back or trivialize feelings or events. I recommend it middle school teachers, for sure.

Sisters Idella and Avis grow up on Bay Chaleur in Canada with no mother and a hard-drinking, depressed father. The narrative follows them, in sketches, through childhood, marriage, adulthood and old age. It was entirely from the women's point of view, and the men figured into the narrative mainly as tormenters and occasional heroes. This is one of the best books I've read recently. The writing was fresh, the characters well-drawn and real, and the dialogue was authenic.

This was an interesting read. . .up to a point. Once we got to the macho, chest-thumping stuff about hunting boar, Pollan totally lost me. I also thought his justifications of meat eating were specious at best. Although I don't eat meat, I don't think people should be required to justify it, however, if they choose to do so, their justifications should be well thought out. Pollan's were, to my mind, neither well thought or argued.

I have had this book of fairy tales since I was very young, and it was always one of my very favorites for bedtime stories. There are beautiful pictures on every other page, and the text is good and easy to understand. This book would be wonderful for any little girl (not scary or anything, though the Velveteen Rabbit made me sad). At fifteen, I still fondly keep this book in my room and sometimes read the stories over again. My favorite was always the Twelve Dancing Princesses (mostly, I think, becuase it involved twelve pretty ball gowns =). Great book and very magical for me!
