Completely brilliant; the latter part of this book hits like a punch in the mouth. You expect dark elements from Neil Gaiman, and in this book, you get them in spades.

More freak-meets-freak goodness from Paul Zindel. This one features a raccoon, effed parents, and a road trip, if I'm remembering correctly. RIP, Paul Zindel. I wish I could somehow track you down and sing you a heartfelt rendition of "To Sir With Love."

I finished it - yeah - it was a tough fight, but I won. For all who haven't started - don't ever start and read this book. It's just a waste of time, a time of struggling to get through it. The story is ok at the beginning, but it sucks to the end. The writing is bad, only short, emotionless sentences and the characters are replaceable and have no profundity. The best most likeable character was the dog! :D So, just go past it and don't read it. Just my opinion and my advice.

I loved the story I wish the ending was different though
Looks thick. Imposing. Hopefully reasonably up-to-date on cognitive science. I love Pinker, though, so it should be a good ride (if Tolstoyian). Makes my other books look like spineless child trolls, to quote a certain actor. :P I want a book on how Charlie Sheen's mind works! ;) Will update.

As a total contemporary American literature guy, I want to be able to say that this book changed my life. Three full read-throughs now and I still think it's one of the most miserable reading experiences ever. I see what Pynchon is (Pynchons are?) trying to do, but something just doesn't click for me.

An interesting tale of giant who does not want the neighborhood children to play in his garden while he is away. So he builds a wall about the garden and the children are very sad. Winter and snow comes and it stays and stays and stays...the giant does not understand and is angry that the spring won't come. One day the children find a way to sneak in and suddenly the garden transforms into spring. The giant takes an interest in a little boy who is trying to climb into a tree but is too short to jump/climb into the tree. The tree limbs are too short to reach down to the child. The giant feels awful about how he has treated the children so he helps the child into the tree. All of the children return day after day, year after year. But the small boy, the giant's favorite, never returns. One day the giant sees the little boy and wanders over. The child has holes in his hands and feet but he won't tell the giant where they came from. He does tell the giant that it is time for him to join him in his garden. When the other children return, they find the giant dead and covered in white flowers. Already this book has irritated parents who do not want there children exposed to overt christian messages. Christianity not being in the subject headings is a problem.

I thought this book was going to be about a quirky collector but it's more about the psychology behind collecting. But is written by a theater professor?!?! There were some interesting parts but this was overall a disappointment.
