Latter-day complaints don't overshadow my fond memories. Goat cheese, sleeping in a loft, Schwanli and Barli, the wind through the Alps--are you feeling lonesome for the mountain?

** spoiler alert ** The true story of Dave Pelzer -- Calif.'s 3rd worse child abuse case. Dave's mother is an alcoholic and she treats him horribly - -he goes from being loved to being isolated, hated and being the family slave. His mother burns him on the stove, and even stabs him with a knife. He is prepped to tell outsiders he "fell, slipped, or whatever" to explain his multiple bruises, cuts and scars on his body. Thi story made me cry. His teachers, and school nurse document his case and finally have child services take Dave from his tormentor's home. Most of my student's want to read this book!!! My students were telling me for years to read this book and I am finally glad that I did!

I can't decide if I enjoyed American Gods more than I did Anansi Boys. Anansi Boys was hilarious; I cracked up laughing while I read it on my futon and scared the bejeezus out of my kitties. While American Gods was not as funny for sure, I think it was a much darker, dirtier, more epic story (and it definitely wasn't devoid of humor, either) and I liked how intricate the twists in the plot became.

A very informative, well-researched, and above all else human journey through GDR East Berlin, through the stories of people who lived there. Heart-wrenching and powerful, a great book to read when you're feeling a bit down about your lot in life. A good hard kick up the perspective.

I liked this book, but I didn't love it. I'm finding it harder to distinguish between all of her books. I think part of the reason is because I find it hard to relate to her female characters. They seem so unlikable: Jule's mom, Eva (the organizer of the competition), the female judge, and to some extent even Jules. They are either bitchy or so focused (on themselves, their career) that I find it hard to see what draws in the men that are attracted to them. Is it really just their good looks? Jules seemed too cold. Yes, she's had a rough past but I didn't feel like there was enough of an explanation as to why she ran so hot and cold with Max. Danny made a comment about her disastrous boyfriends and I really would have liked to have heard a bit more on that. Because I would have thought that effects of the incident with her mom could have been diminished somewhat by the care that she received from the Lunden family. She was able to see a healthy loving relationship. I also didn't get what caused Max to flee and never return for oh so many years. He has a couple of arguments with his father about the direction and the restaurant and just leaves? And his mom has to travel across the world to see him? The explanation was missing something for me. I did enjoy the supporting characters, Beck, Win along with Danny. The kitchen scenes when the team came together to help one another (or just give each other crap) were funny or touching. The next book in the series in Danny's story but it appears that he is being paired with Eva so I may just have to sit that book out until someone tells me the female characterizations improve. I'm tired of bitchy women.

A friend loaned me this book, after insisting several times that I must read it. It was an easy read, overtly as well as overly sentimental - but not really in a good way. The basic story is fine, but I felt the story was written to show off what a good guy the writer was for visiting someone in his past who he probably should have been visiting all along. His own pat on his own back. It wasn't great, wasn't wonderfully written, but I can't honestly say it was horrible, either.

it's just a very sappy but heartwarming book. a bit of a guilty pleasure in that respect... but she writes in a very heartfelt manner, so it's not hard to get swept up in the way she frames the narrative... i've purchased this book for a number of friends and they have all loved it.
