Interesting premise: before a girl commits suicide, she narrates on a set of tapes how thirteen people contributed to her decision to end her life. She then mails the tapes to the first person on the list, and each has to listen to the tapes and mail them to the next person on the list. You see the snowball effect of how the lies that one person spreads can have disastrous consequences, and how an action that you may think is "no big deal" could to someone else be a very big deal. However, I wasn't sure I really liked the execution, and there were a few kind of explicit pages that I had to skip. The story is told through a combination of the girl's tape narration and one of the boys who got the tapes' thoughts, but I also would have liked to known how the other 12 people had reacted to receiving the tapes.

From the beginning of this book, I felt the pull of these characters. An amazing story about the 1960's from the perspective of black maids working for white women. So many emotions, during such a turbulent time, told with feeling. I loved it!

A graduate of the Columbia MFA program, how could I not love Julie Otsuka's first novel? But really, it's fantastic. It follows one broken Japanese family during their forced move from Berkeley, CA in 1942 to an internment camp in Utah. None of the main characters are given names as they represent any of the thousands of Japanese Americans reclassified as enemy aliens. With bare prose and scenes, Otsuka captures the tone of the time and the feeling of being labeled an outcast in one's own home. Moving, beautiful.

Loved the story, loved the canine narrator, one star off for making me cry too much.

the first classical novel I ever read. Loved it, at the age of 11.

For those of us who respect that this story has been around much longer than is easily conceivable by your average Joe, but nonetheless hated reading it when all that seemed intelligible was every third sentence.

It's one of the book I need to read again. Reading reviews of it, I feel there was a lot I didn't get.

Disappointing--I liked the mystery plot and the medieval setting, but the characters were too flat. This is not necessarily a problem in genre fiction, except that they weren't vivid either. I kept forgetting who the love interest was--not a good sign!
