First off, I had never heard of "the diamond ring effect" and actually found myself stopping to research it in the middle of reading the story. FYI, wiki has a very pretty picture. Ok, so, about the story now. Roy is lonely, depressed and stuck at home caring for his ill mother. The relationship with his father is practically non-existant and he longs for a guy he doesn't think even knows he exists. Then appear some lost aliens that need his help and in return they actually help him. This is a short novella and I just felt more story needed to be told. Particularly the relationship between Roy and his father and Roy and his love interest.

Although book#3 is a much needed pain to read to be aware of what's going on in Zoye's life, this book was totally amazing and much much better than book#3. Zoye has a lot of "stuff" to deal in this part - beginning with an attack by an unseen being, upset friends, aphroditie's dangerous visions, a dead new kid, undead and supposedly healing BFF and the evil nephret ! And oh, lets not forget the brewing evil which explodes in the end in a really creepy narration ! The book just gets better with each chapter, throwing fresh incidents and facts about the characters in book. This book makes it worth reading the previous one :D Zoye finally looks to be getting a grip on herself and her responsibilities; but Aphrodite totally won my heart in this one. Read this one for her !!

I loved the premise of this one. The world is somewhat ending the power is out and has been for sometime, there is looting and people are against each other at every turn, humanity is not winning it seems. Fear not, our main characters are tucked away in their family home in the forest surrounded by California redwoods and beautiful scenery, sisters Nell and Eva are surviving. It is clear it is not an easy life and this book covers pretty much every concern you would have about two young girls living in the forest by themselves. The journey is a tough one but after everything that has happened they have each other. These young girls who were somewhat sheltered throughout childhood seem to have the odds stacked against them and even when they are winning, life just does not seem to be that awesome. I really enjoyed the idea and the setting for this story, but I will admit I had a hard time connecting with the girls, they were a bit immature and naive and I felt like I spent a lot of my time shaking my head at how decisions were made. Cool survival book without traveling, most of the dystopian books have a road trip to new world full of hope, this was a pretty stationary story which was different.

This is, I think, a little known work of Orwell's that I came across in some used bookstore. The stories of his time working in restaurants is hilarious and a little bizarre. You'd be amazed at how little anything has changed from then til now. I enjoy everything Orwell, I think he's an excellent and keen observer and essayist. This book is a bit of a departure but really fun.

A rather funny and quirky novel written entirely in "e-mail" format about an unhappy woman in her 40's. Beth begins an email romance with a neighbour (Thomas) and thinks she's going to fall in love with him. Beth's friend Heather talks her into going on a week long "Special Delivery" trip where a group of women "find themselves". Needing to continue her cyberspace romance with Thomas while secluded on an island, Beth purchases a small word processor so she can email Thomas daily about her trip and then download it upon her return home. What Beth learns during her trip and what happens when she returns home is an unexpected surprise. I enjoyed this novel so much that I read it in one sitting in about 3 hours. From back cover: "Where can a 40-ish woman turn when her marriage has gone stale and her kids treat her like an unpaid chauffeur? In Beth Riordan's case, it's to cyberspace. She takes a zany romp with love through wry, revelatory e-mails to Thomas, her handsome neighbour in a New England suburb, a travel writer in the middle of a divorce. Longing and love, family and friendship combine to produce a climax that surprises Beth and the reader alike."

I read this when I was studying abroad in Paris and was on a kick of reading books written by American expats about living in the city. Some of Gopnik's stories interested me more than others. Particularly dramatic and fun was the story about Parisians battle with a British restaurateur who was about to take over their local brasserie in the Latin Quarter. Gopnik's is a good book to read in order to get some idea of the French cultural battles against globalization/Americanization. I have to confess, I was less interested in the segements devoted to his family.

i remember this wasone of my favorite books in 2nd grade
Ngaio Marsh is no Dorothy Sayers or Agatha Christie, but for classic British murder mystery addicts, she will do in a pinch. This particular book reflects the racial attitudes and stereotypes of the era during which it was written and may offend modern sensibilities.
I very much enjoyed the style of the writing of this book. Although, narrated from the first person, who or what the narrated was changed from chapter to chapter. This narrative style tied in very cleverly to one of the themes of the novel, that artists, like God create life.
