This was a fantastic book that actually challenged me to READ the words because it was a vocabulary I was completely unfamiliar with. That being said, the language gripped you and made you WANT to figure out what was there and what all the sea-going descriptors meant. I found myself constantly trying to form the mental image of what they were describing and since Maturin's character was new to seafaring, there is a lot of explanatory text to help us newbies along the way. I definitely look forward to reading the second book!

While Nicholas Sparks books are generally chick lit, I have to say that this one is much less 'mushy' and much more heart. It's full of amazing lessons, giving it a depth not usually found in romances. There are major stories going on aside from the romance, about loss and forgiveness, which made my heart litereally ache. It's a fast, enjoyable read, and I'd recommend it to girls looking for a little light romance/drama, without being at all smutty or too 'fluffy' (Danielle Steele). Great airplane or beachy read.

I really loved this book. I liked the movie, but as some one who knows a little about wine I had a real problem with the movie's reference to Central California as Wine Country. The book made it really clear that Santa Barbara was the poor man’s wine country. The book also did a good job to giving some insight to California’s wine culture and how the tasting bars are becoming the local pubs The other thing the book did was to reference real California wines and wineries. The minute I read that the main character prized Gary Farrell wine (it was written before the winery’s sale) I knew the book was the real deal, and not a Hollywood dressing up of things that needed no such attention. I guess being someone who collects wine and lives in Northern California with quality wineries just minutes away, I viewed the movie as So Cal’s version of the truth (since the hardly acknowledge that anything above Santa Barbara is part of California) and entertaining. But, if you are a true wine lover, and want to read how it played a part in two men’s last hooray, skip the movie and read the book. If you do read this book, take special note of the passage about smelling the cork. It is true! I was given this tidbit of knowledge when I was in my twenties, and have always giggled when I saw someone do it. Now that I know it is actually written down somewhere, I burst out laughing.

I picked up this book because I got to know Kara Sheridan, one of the author's inspirations and information resources for the story of a child born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or Brittle Bone Disease. I had already read one Jodi Picoult novel, "Keeping Faith" in anticipation of this book's release. Ms. Picoult writes novels that don't always have happy endings, about issues that are not generally clear cut -- they're always fuzzy and grey around the edges. In this case, the story is as much about the topic of "unlawful birth" lawsuits as it is about OI, and how both affect two families who were once close friends.
