American gothic...we all love this one! Ironic horror in rural Americana...Stephen King has to have been a Shirley Jackson fan.

This is an amazingly moving story, however, it is very long and very Russian. This book took me forever to read.(3 months) But in the end it was worth the struggle. It is a hard read if you like Russian Literature I highly recommend and if you love real drama this is a great read.

At least I will be reading it as soon as I get the book! I entered one of those goodreads give aways for free copies of books and I won a copy (it's the second time I have won)! Will write a review once I get the book and read it. Have to admit that I just couldn't finish it. It just wasn't that compelling for me--especially as a motivational self-help kind of book. The anecdotal pieces that the author threw in just felt like name dropping. The message didn't seem clear and I'm not really sure what her point was. Wouldn't really recommend it as something that would inspire you or direct you on how to make your work situation better really. I've read better.

it was a beautiful story, well written and touching w/o being sappy. the story focuses on the journey of a boy with Asperger's, and may be particularly good as haddon's previous writing was all children's books. i highly recommend it, and look forward to his next book.

Gah, I am so, so annoyed. Not at this book so much as I am at myself. You know those times in your life where, try as you might, there's basically NO time to read. And you realise and acknowledge that, but you won't accept it, so you try to read anyway. And you get in snippets, but this sporadic reading habit practically ruins the book you're reading, cause there's no continuity or flow. And this is literally the WORST book for it to happen to, given the writing style and timeline of events. GAH! I heard such amazing reviews about it, I even went to a ball that was themed around this book! Everyone I've talked to has either said it was their favourite book, or that it was simply amazing. And I went in expecting that, and wanting that, but I didn't get it. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it, but it frustrates me to know that had I sat down and read it in one go, or through sustained sittings, I would've gotten so much more out of it. Boo. I loved the scenery and the vivid descriptions of the circus, but I wasn't invested enough to love any character. I found their relationships too forced as a result of my lack of emotional attachment, so anything that happened probably didn't have as much effect on me as it would have had on other readers. I have high respect for this author, and I loved the story in its ideas and plot, but the situation I read this book definitely didn't do it justice.

I picked up this book originally on the bargain books table at a local bookshop. I was heading on an international flight and decided to take it with me. I did not want the flight to end so I could continue reading - and I hate flying! I have since picked up another copy of the book as my original one is falling apart from being read and loved.

A great short mystery that wraps Japanese culture and history in the conflicts between modern and traditional Japan and the ever present conflict between the West and Japan.

Great book - a Silent Spring of our time, as the jacket says. I found the description of the political mishandling and treachery particularly interesting. Most of the other science stuff I was pretty familiar with, but then again, its what I was surrounded with for the last 5 years and I am not one who needs much convincing. If you don't feel convinced that global warming/climate change is a human induced phenomenom or are apathetic as to the consequences, read this book. Written as a series of ethnographic vignettes mixed with data and anecdotes, its an easy and well-written read. Came from a series in the New Yorker.

Love You, Mean It was written by four women whose husbands were killed in the World Trade Center on 9/11. I thought this book was beautifully written. What I Learned: Don't take anyone for granted because you never know when they will be taken from you. When tragedy strikes, you will feel like you can't go on. You can, and you will.
