An excellent recounting of Malcolm's life from someone who was there to witness it first hand. I had already read Malcolm's autobiography (as told to Alex Haley) and had been told I didn't know anything about Malcolm because that book wasn't accurate. So I picked this one up and it seemed to corroborate the details in the Haley book. I think the majority of American's really misunderstand Malcolm and the type of man he really was.

A fine MHC weekend read. There was one aspect of the storyline that was a little thin, but enjoyable overall. July 1, 2014, update: Apparently, while I liked the book fine in 2011, it wasn't that memorable. Spent two days reading it and saying, "Have I read this before?" Reached a section that WAS memorable and said, "Yep, read this before."

One of the rare occasions where even a narrator I enjoy (in this case Wil Wheaton), doesn't work for me. It actually hurt the book as Fables is so well established in my mind that his voicing of characters I've already cast quite differently in my head didn't work for me. Still, a good read overall, if not as good as Fables themselves.

Wow. I just finished reading this book and I must say, I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Although, I can say with certainty that I won't be adopting Chua's parenting style with my kids. It's just not in my nature. I do appreciate the opportunity to read her story and to try and understand her beliefs. Maybe it's because I'm an American Westerner, but I believe in the Western way of parenting, as Chua calls it. Sure, I want my future children to succeed and to realize their full potential in any task they take on. I will tirelessly guide them and help them realize their potential -- and catch them when they've discovered their limits. But I think it's also important to give a child some breathing room to express his/her interests and learn how to make their own choices. I think Chua took a lot of this learning experience away from her daughters. Regardless, when reading this book, you can't deny the incredible love Chua has for her daughters and vice versa.

This book is amazing. I started reading it because Sherman Alexie is my all-time favortie author. The book is relatively short, I had to read the whole thing because I couldn't put it down,but it only took a few hours.

Although the story is engaging, I feel that Morrison's style overwhelms her prose. I read this book a second time in an attempt to like it more, but found myself frustrated by the same hyper-stylized portions all over again. If I didn't care about the characters despite the writing, this book would have gotten even fewer stars.

This is a really excellent book and I would recommend it to just about anyone. There are two stories running concurrently - a modern-day story of a youth who was excommunicated from a Fundamentalist Mormom sect who is trying to uncover the mystery of who killed his father, and then a fictionalized account of Ann Eliza Young, Brigham Young's 19th wife (really 55th or so wife) and how she came to crusade against celestial marriage (polygamy), Brigham himself and, in essence, the Mormon church. REALLY fascinating stuff; makes me want to learn more about the Mormon faith. Also causes you to examine your own views on religion.
