Jose Saramago is not an author you want to read if you like to have everything wrapped up with a bow and fully explained in the end. In novel after novel, Saramago drops characters into bizarre circumstances and very rarely (if ever) explains exactly how or why those circumstances came about. In this particular tale, Saramago has the entire Iberian Peninsula cleave from the rest of Europe and begin a journey sailing out to sea. The story focuses on 5 people and one dog on the peninsula as they attempt to understand how their lives and homeland have changed. All five characters had improbable events happen to them right around the time when the peninsula split from the mainland. The characters try to determine if these occurances are directly related to the fracture of the peninsula from Europe. The book contains social and political undertones like many other Saramago novels. Also like other Saramago novels the books is intellectual and there is more to gather from reading it other than the main plotline. Saramago novels are allegorical and like the others "The Stone Raft" is commenting on society. Saramago is one of my favorite authors and I found The Stone Raft to fit in well with his other works. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I liked several of his other novels Blindness, All the Names, The Cave or The Double. Saramago also has a very unique writing style with lots of run on sentances and no quotation marks. This can be a challenge for readers who are new to Saramago's works. In my opinion it is worth the effort and besides you soon enough become used to his writing style.

Elveda Güzel Vatanım - Ahmet Ümit TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

Sophie Littlefield is GOOD. I can't believe I haven't heard of her before! I got Book #3 of the Aftertime Trilogy as an ARC and figured I'd try it out because, come on, who doesn't love a good zombie novel? Aftertime's another post-apocalyptic novel - an unexpected Bioterrorist attack on the United States has led to an epidemic which causes humans to turn into cannibals with almost no brain function called Beaters (something like flesh eating zombies). Cass is our main girl in this story, she's had a tough life and if that wasn't enough, she wakes up during the apocalypse in the middle of no where with no memory of what happened to her and chunks of flesh missing from her body. To make matters worse, last thing she remembers is her daughter being rescued from a bunch of beaters who got to Cass. Now Cass is on a mission - to rescue her daughter Ruthie. Along the way she meets a guy named Smoke (kind of really hot!!) who accompanies on her journey. Aftertime is a bit more original than most of the post-apocalyptic/zombie novels that I've read. It's got all the cool elements but seems a bit more realistic. I'll admit, Cass isn't really a favorite character of mine. She's flawed but that didn't put me off. It was the fact that the book kept suggesting that she was tough, when honestly a lot of times she seemed afraid (understandable, but still),dependent and almost a little desperate. She was also pretty horny and embarrassed about being too forward, like that's something to worry about when there's flesh-zombie-like-things on your trail! But the rest of the novel, I loved! The plot pulled me in completely and parts of it also seemed highly believable, as in, something that might happen if the apocalypse occurs. This isn't exactly YA. I'd suggest it to people who are 18+. If you liked Amanda Hocking's Hollowland , you might like this one too, though Cass is nothing like Remy!

My Chemical Romance - Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

It seems appropriate to be writing my review of this book while not quite in my right mind. I can't blame my state of mind on any of the drugs mentioned in the book; mine is just from a migraine. I've hallucinated twice, once when my mother gave me Dramamine in case I'd get sea sick on a whale watching trip (I've never gotten sea sick) and once when on Vicadin after Sean was born (I immediately stopped taking it after that). I've never gotten drunk to the point of losing control of myself or needing to vomit (I don't like how alcohol makes my head feel) and I've tried any other drugs. Despite being the completely wrong demographic for this book, I enjoyed it! Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas reminds me most of Catcher in the Rye in that both are stream of consciousness adolescent rants fueled by drugs and alcohol. I did most of my reading of Fear and Loathing while Ian played Grand Theft Auto: Vice Cityand the video game compliments the book well. The only problem: I ended up picturing Thompson and his lawyer like the main character and his lawyer in the game. My favorite parts of the book was the drive to Las Vegas and the bar scene in Circus-Circus. I loved the description of the scared hitchhiker who was unfortunate enough to get picked up by two guys tripping on just about everything while driving at break-neck speed to Vegas. Having been to Circus-Circus, I laughed at his description of the circus antics happening overhead of the gamblers and drinkers. I don't know what possessed anyone to build a place that looks like a demented version of a childhood fantasy and then turn it into a casino.
