I love Enid Blyton, and I hated how everyone at school did not understand The Naughtiest Girl In School. Good thing she came from a rich family.

This book seems to create polar reactions. I don't gravitate toward this author as much as, say, Murakami. I think I prefer less of a minimalist style... Or I can take it in smaller doses. The bleakness of this story is unrelenting. I did enjoy the spare poetry in some of the descriptions. One phrase in particular stands out where the author describes a night of "autistic darkness". Brilliant that! You knew the story wasn't going to end well, but perhaps it did. I like that it was a bit open ended and not neatly tied up. The amount of patience the father showed in answering his son's many questions was touching, and underscored the occasional tensions when the father snapped back, then apologized. When you strip all the trappings of everyday life away, things like the cadence of patience and frustration as outward signs of a deep love are still there, alive and well. For that, we are well reminded. As a note, the lack of punctuation I took for shoddiness in the ebook version, but alas it was intentional.

Justin Case: School, Drool, and Other Daily Disasters is the story of one boy’s year in third grade. Justin worries about everything, and I do mean everything. Will his new third grade teacher be nice or mean? Will he fail the third grade because he’s having trouble remembering what 8x3 equals? Where has his most favorite stuffed animal gone? Why does his dad seem to like torturing him by signing him up for soccer, baseball, and other potentially embarrassing sporting activities? Why is there something as scary-sounding as the Boiler in the Way-Back of the basement? Why must he learn to play the violin and then have a recital to show everyone how horrible he is? Will he ever get a dog? If he does, can he stop being afraid of dogs? Why are the girls in his class so weird all of a sudden? Is there any way he can possibly survive the third grade? He doesn’t think so. Join Justin as he tries to get through his year in the third grade. Everyday brings something new: new worries, new adventures, new friends, new embarrassments, new accomplishments. Even though Justin worries about everything, he is a funny character that all readers will root for. This book is seriously one of the funniest I’ve read in a long time. I laughed out loud while I was reading it, and I thought Justin was totally relatable. (He reminded me a little of myself. I’m a bit of a worrier, too.) I think anyone who enjoys the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books should definitely pick this one up. You won’t be sorry.

You can't deny this is a beautifully written book - stunningly visual, poignant, boldly original, comedic etc etc etc. I can't really say anything about it that hasn't already been said. All I can really add are my own musings: I did find it interesting that that as imaginative as Gibson was in this book, his predictions of the internet and electronic media were in some ways more limited and rooted to the physical world than what has since come to pass - data exists in a physical place, the internet is generated in a building, there's little user-generated content, software patches exist as physical objects etc etc. Not that I'm blaming him for "getting it wrong" - it's just an interesting aspect to ponder. I wish I had read this in 1984 to really understand the context of the book. I spent a lot of time trying to remember what people knew and didn't know then. I have to say, I was a little disappointed with the ending. It felt contrived and quite deliberately enigmatic to me. I could almost hear Gibson's disembodied voice... "They'll be debating this one for DECADES! Bwahahahahaha......." Other than that, I really loved this book. It's a masterpiece for a reason.

My first 'read' of "Peter Pan" - of course I already knew the story of Peter Pan prior to reading this, or rather, I knew Disney's version of it, but I'd actually never thought to get hold of the original before now. That was a mistake! "Peter Pan" is one of the few 'true' classics I've discovered in recent years. A book written for children that still charms when read for the first time as an adult. I found myself laughing out loud several times, and never got the impression that I needed the rosy tint of nostalgia to fully appreciate it. It's obviously a lot darker than the Disney version, but I wonder whether children pick up on this, or if it's something you don't notice until reading it as an adult.

Had high expectations given the author but found myself a little disappointed. Salinger's writing lived up to expectations but perhaps it was the characters that left me dissatisfied. I guess his common portrayal of the Glasses has become less appealing to me than before.
