This book has a grown-up message in the form of a story that kids will love! My daughter received this book as a gift when she graduated from Kindergarten. Although the message was bigger than what she could really grasp at the time, the story is filled with emotion that kept her interested with each turn of the page. From the excitement of seeing new sights to the slumps of reality to escaping the Waiting Place to being alone and then hiking on to success! In a children's story, Dr. Seuss challenges readers in any walk of life to push on through the hard times because we all have the potential to move mountains. It is an inspirational book no matter how old (or young) you are. "Step with care and great tact and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act."

I'm still reading this book, but what I find most interesting thus far is DFW's use of abbreviations and symbols as a part of his writing--for example, using the lemniscate instead of writing the word "infinity". It has the effect of making the reader aware of concepts that essentially exist beyond language (in this particular occasion) and in others, makes one aware of how highly developed and ingrained linguistic sign patterns are that we can use either symbols, acrostics or initials to represent words, phrases, concepts, without ever doubting their meaning. More to come on this book that I find fascinating.

I probably ought to read this book again, but I remember it being some of the toughest reading I ever had to do. Nevertheless, one idea from this book that remains is the notion that the more evil a person the more alone he/she becomes. The main character in the book, Kurtz, is the epitome of evil and is alone. Parallels of this notion are seen throughout film and other books. I know it is kind of pop-culturish, but the most notable example I seen is Michale Corleone in Godfather II. He has killed off everyone to include his own brother and he has alienated his wife. The final scene has him sitting alone with his thoughts and in his evil.

while this was my first read by McCarthy, I don't think it hurt to have done the 2nd book in the trilogy first. I don't usually do that. I found this to be a very compelling book and that I was surprised to find that the back and forth between English and Spanish didn't put me off.
