I could not put this book down! Although it is a bit haunting, as far as plots go, it is beautifully rendered. I was especially impressed with the way Petterson was able to tell so many stories at once, without ever becoming tangential and following any story line other than that of the main character's recollections of his life. For instance, there is one particularly poignant scene that involved the death of a child, and the only perspective of this event that we are given is that of the main character. I wish I could write like that - but I can't even craft a very articulate review of it!

Good historical novel. Really enjoyed the ending of this book. I liked the way the author tied it all together. At first I was a little concerned I would never be able to follow 16 different main characters. That changed part way through and I realized I was not going to follow the lives of all 16 brides. I appreciated the way it provoked me to think about making judgements based on faulty thinking and how that can cause misunderstandings. I have enjoyed each of Stephanie's books and look forward to a possible sequel to this book?

One of the worst books I have ever read. Apart from Bartlett’s Quotations, absolutely no research went into this book. Unfortunately I was saddled with two copies so if you need one for your own graduate course, let's arrange a sale or swap. Of course, you should probably rethink any course that it making you read this.
