a look at history through theme and method rather than chronological cause-and-effect. more interesting for the way it's organized than the histories it's documenting, though those are sometimes fascinating too. delanda shows the links connecting biological, geological, economic, and linguistic histories, explaining immigration via pathology (i.e. the way microbes come in and out of the body to effect disease), social class dynamics/formation via rock stratification, and pidgin histories by way of psychoanalysis. weird, sometimes astounding, this text (and its 100 pages of footnotes) won't help your pub trivia scores let alone in everyday life. but the Technicolor-Dreamcoat cover sure looks good on a bookshelf.

I read this a long time ago in 8th grade. I don't remember all that much about it, but I do remember that I really enjoyed Maya Angelou's work and found the book to be a deep and moving work.

Loved this book. I'm a huge fan of regency mystery and this book had all my favorite elements. Mystery! Murder!! Danger!!! A dash of romance and a feisty heroine to boot. The plot moved along at a great pace and the characters were well developed. The author has a very enjoyable writing style and I can't wait to read the next in the series. I was a little disappointed at the ending. I don't want to give anything away so all I'm gonna say is that I thought the earl's suggestion at the very end was a little cliche. I sincerely hope it doesn't happen, although I'm sure it will, but hopefully the author can make up for it. :)

I just taught this book for 5/6th grade literature. It was awesome because Jay Hosler does an excellent job of breaking down the lives of bees while still making the storyline intersting and the pictures were great. Plus, he's an accessible author, to the point of answering emails about curriculum. Which reminds me, I should send him what I made...
