I started reading this in the afternoon at the airport - I read before, during, after the flight, and stayed up that night to finish. If I were to be more objective, I might give this 4 stars, but the boy reminded me of my boy... and it overtook me completely. Very bleak view of the breakdown of humanity after society ceases to exist, though still with a glimmer of hope in the goodness of few. Not for the faint-of-heart, though.

I really enjoyed this. It was hard to follow at first since I got the characters mixed up. Even though this is organized as a dictionary, it's really the description of a cast of characters. This book is about those who populate a Chinese village during the Cultural Revolution. I enjoyed its insight into the way that Chinese peasants experienced that time period.

אחרי 14 שנות נישואים, ורגע לפני שלוסי קליין מודיעה לבעלה, ג'ק, שהנה-הנה היא בהריון ששרד, מודיע לה ג'ק שהוא רוצה להתגרש. כמובן, כשהיא מספרת לו את החדשות, הוא משנה את דעתו לגבי הגירושין ומציע לחיות בנפרדות (על משקל נבצרות) באותו הבית ולגדל את העולל באופן שיתופי תוך ניהול חיים נפרדים. והיא נגררת אחריו ואחר שיקולים כלכליים ומסכימה להסדר. ומכאן אני ממליצה לכם לא לקרוא את הכריכה האחורית, אם אתם לא מעוניינים בספויילרים פראיים שיהרסו לכם את הספר ואת חדוות הגילוי. החיים של ג'ק ולוסי שאינם סוגים בשושנים, הופכים להיות מורכבים וביזאריים אף יותר לנוכח ההסדר. אבל אל תדאגו, בלי לספר את פרטי העלילה, רק שתדעו שכמו בכל סיפור אגדה יהודית, הסוף טוב הכל טוב וכולם מסתדרים על הצד הטוב ביותר, כי ג'ניפר קוברן לא היתה מספיק אמיצה ליצור דמות נשית עכשווית שיכולה גם לעמוד על רגליה. מלכתחילה לוסי היא דמות שמובלת לסיטואציות של חייה. היא לא יוזמת, היא לא אקטיבית. אין לה בדיוק דעה משל עצמה שהיא יכולה לעמוד עליה. במשך הספר, לוסי מקבלת איזה גוון של אקטיביות אבל הוא לא מספיק לטעמי. ישנם בספר קטעים קורעים ושופכים מצחוק!! גם בגלל שיש לדמות הראשית, לוסי, נטיה להפוך מצבים לסטנדאפ אבל במיוחד עם הדודות היהודיות הזקנות שהרסו אותי מצחוק. אחת מהן מבקרת תדיר בהלוויות של זרים. אבל זה לא זה. קוברן לא לוקחת את הספר לקצה ובונה דמות שיכולה להוות דוגמא נשית שעושה לקורא "וואוו"!! בשורה התחתונה, ספר נחמד להעביר כמה שעות.

This is a great collection of short stories by an amazing writer. David Levithan is able to show and convey that love just is. Sometimes it lasts, sometimes it doesn’t, sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s not, but it exists all the same. Some of my favorite stories were (in order of appearance): “Starbucks Boy”, “Miss Lucy Had A Steamboat”, “The Number Of People That Meet On Airplanes”, “Princes”, and “Skipping The Prom”. I also really liked “Without Saying”. It was mysterious and confusing in the best way possible. As soon as I finished, I went back and read it over again. Overall, if you’re looking for a story with heart, there is a good chance you’ll find that story in this collection. I urge anyone who believes that love can defy gender, age, and sexuality to check this book out because as Levithan himself puts it: “It doesn’t have to be on Valentine’s Day. It doesn’t have to be by the time you turn eighteen or thirty-three or fifty-nine. It doesn’t have to conform to whatever is usual. It doesn’t have to be kismet at once, or rhapsody by the third date. It just has to be. In time. In place. In spirit. It just has to be.”
