3.5 stars Debut Dr Margaret (Maggie) Levine's radio talk show Live with Levine has been a hit since she started the show nine months ago and now she's the most popular radio personality in Chicago. For the thirty-three year-old psychiatrist it's been a slow recovery from the emotional, psychological and physical trauma of a stalker's attack a year ago. After one of Maggie's regular callers - 'Owen' - becomes agitated and threatening one evening during her show, she arrives home to find her house has been vandalised with the word 'fear' written in blood on her walls. Maggie is a target again. The Society for the Study of the Aberrant Mind - SSAM - is a successful private business to catch serial murderers and violent offenders. Because Maggie is a long-time friend of the founder, SSAM takes on Maggie's case. Ethan Townsend, thirty-eight year-old ex-Secret Service agent is in charge of protecting Maggie and securing her house. What becomes apparent fairly quickly is that 'Owen' is using the same m.o. as 'Fearmonger', a serial killer who has been in hiding for over a decade. This was a pretty satisfying read. The prose, pacing and plot were really good. The hero and heroine were likable and well-described with good detail on their backgrounds. The motivations of the killer were believable. There were a couple of issues though. I thought that SSAM may have been encroaching too much on the police's turf. I think that the police/FBI would have been leading the investigation and maybe using SSAM as consultants. It seemed to be the other way around with SSAM leading the investigation. A couple of times Maggie did tend to do something that seemed a bit unlikely for a woman who had been attacked by a stalker previously and now had a serial killer after her. Plus it was just a little too easy for the killer to eventually get his hands on Maggie. This appears to be a first novel from author Anne Marie Becker. Only Fear is pretty good romantic suspense overall and I like the concept of SSAM bringing together experts from different fields. I look forward to reading the next in the series. It's a really hard read, and it's pretty morbid, but this book is ridiculously good.

There is a reason why this book is such a classic. Scarlett is such a three dimensional character and I love her relationship with Rhett. This is a book to read over and over.

Interesting character. Not the best writer, but he tells his story with simplicty and clarity. Reminds me a bit of Hemmingway with regards to his macho sensibility. I was curious about Inuit culture and found this book on a thrift store shelf one day quite serendipitously. I think it is a good introduction to the subject, and it is also intereting to read it from Duncan Pryde. He was a bit of a character in Canadian politics. After the experiences in this book he goes on to become a minister of the Northwestern Territories.

Not the most terrific memoir, but I give the writer credit for coming up with a brilliant blogging topic. I much prefer My Life in France by Julia Child, one of the best examples of Expat Writing ever written.

This was a rich, multi-faceted book that continued to amaze me. The characters were well developed and the stories were absorbing. It is a long story but definitely worth it. I highly recommend it!

Dark Fire was definitely one of Feehan's best, and it is definitely one of my favorites in the series. Darius and Tempest were great leading characters, but I also liked the presence of the secondary characters like Desari, Julian, Syndil, Barack, and Dayan who made up Darius's family and became Tempest's family as well. I loved that there was a lot of action in the book as Tempest found herself thrust into a battle that had been waged against Darius and his family in a previous book. I haven't read this series in order and have yet to read Julian/Desari's story, but I was still able to follow this story without having read the other book. Overall Dark Fire was a great read, and I would definitely recommend picking it up.

Bud, Not Buddy (Coretta Scott King Author Award Winner) by Christopher Paul Curtis (1999): When Bud Caldwell escapes from his foster home in 1936, he embarks upon an odyssey that takes him through depression-era Michigan and into the company of a jazz band. But will he be deterred from his quest to find his father? Bud’s street smarts coupled with his naivete and vulnerability give his narration more than one dimension, but the real hook here are the funny-but-true “Bud Caldwell’s Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and Making a Better Liar Out of Yourself.” Many aspects of the time period are touched upon, such as hoovervilles, sundown towns, jazz bands, and the economics of keeping a white man in a black band, but far from reading like a history book, the novel thrives on Bud’s pluck and luck and builds to real emotional punches.[return]
