Very gripping--I had a hard time putting it down. I really enjoyed reading it.

I loved this book! One of my new all-time favorites. Elizabeth Gilbert draws readers into her journey to three "I" countries (Italy, India, and Indonesia) as she searches for a balance between physical and spiritual fulfillment. Her voice and style are moving, funny, and easy to relate to. It makes you want to travel the world and also reassess your own life for the parts that mean the most to you.

Lots of great ideas here--student choice, real-life learning, process logs that turn into a first-person paper, peer sharing and peer evaluation. I don't know how much I can implement within our standards-based timeframe, but I'm going to try.

Cambria Will Not Yield gave a good review of the Bulldog Drummond books here: http://cambriawillnotyield.blogspot.c... I'm very fond of Sapper's (H. C. McNeile) character, Hugh 'Bulldog' Drummond. I like Drummond because he stands in opposition to the intellectual detective heroes such as Sherlock Holmes. Although far from an imbecile, Drummond doesn't conquer through superior intellect; he conquers through sheer British pluck and bulldog tenacity. Sapper always poked fun at his own and his hero's intellectual capabilities, but he very astutely delineated the metaphysic at work undermining the Western world in general and England in particular in his novels. Drummond is always up against some capitalist who uses the radical dregs of society, letting them think they are accomplishing their purposes, to destroy the old order. Of course, the two-fisted, ale-drinking Drummond always defeats the capitalist-radical coalitions. But somewhere along the line Drummond must have left us, because the sinister coalition has triumphed throughout the Western world. Infinitely more than we need Joe DiMaggio, we need Bulldog Drummond. So put out an S. O. S., calling Bulldog Drummond. The 'Bulldog Drummond' books: 1. Bulldog Drummond 2. The Black Gang 3. The Third Round 4. The Final Count 5. The Female of the Species 6. Temple Tower 7. The Return of Bulldog Drummond 8. Bulldog Drummond Strikes Back 9. Bulldog Drummond at Bay 10. Challenge The first four books all deal with Drummond's battles against the evil genius Carl Peterson. The fifth, my favorite, deals with Drummond's battle against the black widow mistress of Carl Peterson, Irma. This book features the most politically incorrect ending in all of literature. The first five books should be read in order; the other books need not be. After McNeile's death in 1937, his friend Gerard Fairlie kept the Drummond character going, but I have not read the Fairlie books, so I cannot say whether or not they are up to the original ones.

Great read. Thoughtful, inspiring, funny, real & with touches of hard-earned wisdom. Not preachy - not lofty - just-down-to-earth & honest. I admire MJF greatly, and I think he's got the kind of outlook that we all should aspire to. Stop & smell the freakin' roses! :)

There are some sequels that can't measure up to the potential of a good series. Blood Bound is not one of those sequels. In fact, I enjoyed it even more than the first installment in the Mercy Thompson books. A little backstory: Mery is a shapeshifter (a walker) who can transform herself into a coyote. She was raised by werewolves and is tight with their leader, Bran. She is living with Bran's son, Samuel, who was her first love. Things ended badly between them years ago when she found out he only wanted her, so she could bear his kids. They only became reacquainted about 6 months ago, and now Sam is Mercy's roommate... though he wants to be more. Adam is the local werewolf alpha and he lives next door to Mercy. And there is something between them.. but it hasn't gone far. --Mercy is a mechanic by trade, and that explains her ties to Zee, the fae who used to be her boss, and Stefan, the vampire whose van she is working on. As our book begins, Stefan comes to Mercy to collect on a favor. There is a demon possessing vampire and Stefan believes Mercy will be immune to his mind control. He's right, but the demon-vamp poses a much greater risk. He is crazed with bloodlust --and once everyone figures out his true nature, Stefan is tasked with bringing him down. Mercy's wolf-friends get pulled into the search, which threatens their very lives. And of course, when all is said and done, they need Mercy to help finish the job. This was a great book. I love the world-building in this series; And while Moon Called focused mainly on the wolf-world, this one gives us an inside look at the vampires. It's heavy on the action and light on romance; but it's very character driven. Would definitely recommend this series to any Urban Fantasy reader. 4 1/2 stars.
