As much as I like and respect John Straley, not that I know him well, I have read his novels of Cecil Younger with a touch of exasperation. I have a knee-jerk reaction against novelists that portray Alaskans as quirky throwbacks to whatever time isn't now and I am not terribly receptive to a style of writing that is more poetry than prose. Mind you, I am fully aware that both of these characteristics are in large part responsible for the success of John Straley novels, nevertheless... Having said that, I loved this book. The setting was the Pacific Northwest and southeast Alaska, during a time in history that is not generally embraced and/or publicized, the period of violent struggle between big business and labor unions. It was full of interesting characters whose quirks were accepted, by me, as being a result of actually living in a "time that isn't now." They became who they were and reacted as they did due to the difficult and turbulent era in which they lived. The prose did not aspire to poetry. It was beautiful in the way that the hands of a hard-working man or woman are beautiful. It was no-nonsense, workmanlike, but showing experience and skill in creating a world that I wanted to remain in for much much longer.

Read when I was maybe 17 ~ read it again at about 20. What a love story! I'd like to read again to ask myself why I was sooooo captivated by it. I read Fountainhead first and fell in love with Ayn Rand books. Maybe nothing more interesting than I'm a hopeless romantic. We'll see.

Found this browsing at the library. Very easy reading, but I found myself so caught up in the characters. At one point, I had pulled over to the beach on my way home from work. I grabbed the book and sat glued to the pages while sitting in my car with the windows open. In a chapter, one of the characters was standing on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the water. The author was describing the surroundings and the sounds of the ocean. I got chills because she was describing the exact visual and sounds I had sitting there at the beach. I hated the book to end......wanted to be able to visit the characters for coffee the next day to see what they were up to. Loved it!

I did really like this (like the stars say). The dialogue was delightful. The story was incredible; so much about that time/place/culture, but also so much about human beings any time. I understand why it's a classic. Worth re-reads and studying.

I really hated this book. The only reason I wasted my time and kept going was because I wanted to see how he pulled it all together in the end. Ha! If I had known the ending would have been that ridiculous, I wouldn't have kept going.

Reading this again, because I love it and I think I'll be on a Wharton and Eyre kick for awhile now...
