Whilst I can fully appreciate the themes Wilde puts forward; the corruption of youth, the tainted influence of vanity, the fascinating prospect of observing the degradation of the soul, the novel simply fell short on the developments of the characters themselves. Of course, he did a magnificent job in portaying Gray as the controversial youth he is intended to be, but that accounts for the entirety of his being, and his role as the protagonist of the novel. There are no intriguing back stories, no slices of gripping history behind the names and simply an over-abundance of the rich man's dinner parties that served no purpose but to show us the day-to-day life of Dorian Gray. One chapter could have fulfilled this role sufficiently. Was Wilde satirising the upper class or simply being overbearingly pretentious? The poetic dialogue that just screamed 'theatre' between Lord Harry/Henry (really?) and the Duchess (I believe it was) toward the end of the novel was verging on the ridiculous. Wilde clearly wrote the part of Lord Henry as a vehicle for his own philosophies. An eccentric, contradictory and frankly annoying character, I only just managed to cope with his presence for the 250-or-so pages and was glad it ended there. I can completely understand why Wilde wanted him in the story, however. He, in one entity, presented both reality and shady deception for Dorian that essentially led him to his fate. It seems Lord Henry was the vessel for Wilde's interesting musings about the world, or perhaps those that he didn't agree with. Either way, his perpetual offering of "thought-provoking" advice, slogans, phrases and proverbs became transparent and almost boring. Wilde did have a lot to say with this novel, and thankfully, he's worth listening to.

This was my first actual reading of Freud's primary works, but there were hardly any surprises. This text is concerned mostly with examples from his personal Psychotherapy practice, and left me seeking a more detailed and supported explanation of his underlying theory. Certainly not bad for an introduction to Freud, though.

I dearly loved this audiobook, and consider it one of my favorite memoirs of all time. The author's honesty, humor, and insight into the behavior of the various tribes he encountered and lived among in Africa, as well as his keen eye for poignant detail, make this a real, visceral experience. You feel like you lived through it yourself, with all the new and puzzling smells, sights, sounds, plus the shocks to the system, betrayals, and corruption. It is overwhelmingly different in every way than life in the USA (or Australia, where I live now). The amazing life of the baboons is wonderful, too, but not really the entire focus of much of the book. I now want to find and read everything Sapolsky has ever written, as I have a profound respect for him, as well as affection and trust in his perspective.

This book is on my "read once a year" list. Many reviews of this book are available - I'll give maybe one of the shortest. Marcus Aurelius was one of the last of the "good" Roman emperors - good in terms of moral fiber and actual leadership ability. During his time the Roman Empire was at it's zenith, stretched to its limits and begining to fray at the edges. He spent much of his reign fighting barbarians at the edges of the empire, propping up a people growing increasingly unwilling to make the necessary sacrifices to maintain the strength of the empire (sound familiar?) He was taught from an early age in the Stoic tradition, which he adopted as his philosophical system through out his life. He was an intellectual emperor who recorded his thoughts in what would eventually become "Meditations". One gets the feeling he didn't write it for an audience, but for himself as a way to buttress his strength against the long odds against him. For someone surrounded by riches and adulation, he reminds us in his writings that our life in the grand scheme of time is but an instant, and how adulation and praise by others is of no value. Living a good, clean, moral life is the ultimate goal.

When I grow up, I want to be consider worthy of the classification madman. I've classified this book under professional-development. I wish there was more books like this. Our society gets stuck in these basins and the only thing that gets us any progress are these minds who at the time are labelled madmen. The fact is that most of the greatest minds throughout history were people suffering from some mental illness. In particular, most of those within the domain of mathmatics who were true genius ended in the taking for there own life. Chapter 9 is entitled, The hermit from Montana. This is the story of Theodore Kaczynski who was one of the greatest mathmeticians of the 20th century but also unfortunately, he was also the Unibomber. I have always made it a priority when learning of the masters in a particular domain to really understand the person. This book does a great job in doing that for many diciplines. The author Pickover is much like Simon Singh in that he is a great writer with a solid foundation of science. He was a writer for Discover magazine and a research staff member for IBM.

Does he have a social disorder of some kind ? He was super awkward and didnt really know how to be social and was super smart.
