CITY OF THIEVES BY DAVID BENIOFF: From David Benioff, author of The 25th Hour and screenwriter for The Kite Runner, comes an original tale of adventure, laughter, and ongoing mystery set against the backdrop off World War II and the Siege of Leningrad. City of Thieves is a fast-paced, enjoyable book that will have you telling your friends about it. Lev Beniov is a Leningrad local, fondly referring to the city of his birth as Piter after Petersburg. Left to fend for himself with some friends, he spends his days starving, foraging for food. When a dead Nazi falls from the sky via parachute, he ransacks the body for food. He is soon captured by the Russian army and is imprisoned expecting execution, because all findings are required to be turned over to the Russian army. In prison he befriends an unusual man named Kolya, a deserter. The Colonel surprisingly offers the two a deal for their freedom and survival: to find twelve eggs in less than week for his daughter’s wedding cake. And so begins a most unusual adventure, filled with danger, horror, and hunger. But Benioff keeps the book fast-paced and entertaining with the back and forth banter between the main characters: Lev is a seventeen year old virgin, and Kolya is a very vocal sex addict. While at times the language and actions of the characters force readers to remind themselves it’s 1942, it is nevertheless a quick read that you won’t soon forget. Riordan does a good job of translating the Greek gods into modern-day archetypes, and I liked the wide range of mythological characters and situations he incorporated into the plot. The story really does feel like a 21st century Greek myth--the gods are still petty, the monsters are still horrible, and the quests are still daunting and unfair. So in terms of tone, theme, story, and character, this book is right on the money. What it lacks is a strong writing style and professional prose; despite all of its strengths, the writing feels a little juvenile. Whatever the case, this is a series I want to continue; hopefully Riordan will find his stride within a book or two.

Photoshop Elements 6 For Dummies is a reasonable guide to using Photoshop Elements. It describes the various options clearly in language that is easy to understand. It is weak on telling you why or when you would want to use various options. I believe it is best used as a reference manual.

I love the camaraderie in this book, but was a bit disappointed in the ending.

A different type of story to say the least. I wasn't a fan, though there were certain scenes in the story that stand out to me. Good writing, just not my style.

I learned a TON from this book: like how to put some things in scene and others not in scene, how to make small things resonate by introducing them and bringing them back later, and also, most importantly, Philip Roth is as good as everyone says.

This is the second book in the House of Night series where our protagonist becomes a skank. She does not sound like any teenager I have ever spoken to, except maybe some very stereo typical teenage girl. (but again I have not talked to one so stereo typical as Zoey Redbird...) In Betrayed we are not completely off the tracks yet, with Zoey still dating the school hottie, Eric. But it is the painful beginning of a ridiculous and unnecessary derailment. Aphrodite is still annoying and Zoey is still a self-arbsorbed super-duper-I-have-it-all-Iam-so-perfect-heroine. Neferet is a sly witch who is competing with our main character about who can be more skanky. If you have not read any further books of the series, I strongly recommend you to stop at the end of this book. It only gets WORSE Do. not. read. on. Unless you still love Twilight, then by all means continue! (love quadrangle in waiting, you will be pleased!) Update: I have not read the newest books in the series, perhaps they contain a love hexagon. It would not be surprising.

I like how in this book we hear from more points of view, because I thought it was cool when we switched in the first book, but we only heard from three. In this book I've already heard from more than that. I enjoyed this book just as much as the first, maybe even more, because I really enjoyed hearing from more people.
