While I liked the first book in the series,Leviathan, I didn't love it, so I took a while getting around to this second installment. I liked this better than the first one. WEsterfield has definitely created a fascinating steampunk world of war with the British-led Darwinists on one side with their genetically engineered "beasties" and the German-led Clankers on their other with their giant machines. Deryn, the Scottish lassie who has disquised herself as a girl to join the crew of the beastie airship Leviathan, has joined forces with the Austro-Hungarian Clanker prince Alek, who barely escaped with his life and a few supporters in the last book after the murder of his parents sets off the war. (Yes, it's a reversioning of WWI.) When the Leviathan's mission to Turkey goes "pear-shaped," they both find themselves on the run in Istanbul. There are some thrilling fight scenes and some interesting twists and turns in the plot, including teaming up with the "Young Turks" seeking to overthrow the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Needless to say Deryn is falling for Alek, so we're sure to see that storyline continued in the next book,Goliath, which I am now looking forward to.

I loved this book the first time I read it (6/10) and I still loved it the second time around. I was happy that it was picked for our bookclub so that I could go back and relive this "ghost" story. Margaret Lea lived a secluded life with her mother and father and worked in the family book store until she was summoned to the home of famed author Vida Winter, picked to hear her "real" life story before she dies. Margaret is taken back to the beginning of life at Angelfield and how the "twins" came to be. Things were always off with the Angelfield family, but none more so with Adeline and Emmeline. Miss Winter tells the story and as it unfolds you question, who is this Vida Winter? How does she connect to the story being told? Margaret does her reseach to prove certain facts in the story and the connections she is able to make, while dealing with her own ghost. The "twist" of the story really knocks you for a loop when Margaret figures it out, you are can't believe it, but want to know the rest of the story. A very well written novel that kept me engrossed and I hope there is more of this from Diane Setterfield in the future.

Perhaps the most original, moving, imaginative, and stunning piece of modern literature I have ever read. It's too much to describe, any attempt would only betray the true art in Helprin's words. A true classic!

Good book but I expected more. It didn't live up to the hype. Some people were putting it in the same category as To Kill A Mockingbird. Forget it. It's not even close to the same caliber as To Kill A Mockingbird. Shame of you!

If you've read all the "Wheel of Time" novels and need a new fantasy epic, this will do. Goodkind's world is simpler, but governed by the same kind of tension between good and evil. I found the morality play here a little too heavy-handed for my own taste; some folks may find it engaging.

I read this awhile back so I can't write a comprehensive review, but this was a good book. A very interesting look at some of the black markets in our country, and exposes many of the misdeeds and exploitations of human beings that are committed through their existence. People screaming that immigrants are taking away "our" jobs might have a different opinion once they read the chapter on immigrants that work on farms in California and the vulgar conditions they live in.

Read this when they were still articles in Vanity Fair. Amazing, I still have some of the cut-outs.
