Throughout almost the entire book, Troilus and Cressida appears to be the idealized courtly romantic poem. Though set in Troy during the Greek seige, Middle English notions of love and virtue dictate Troilus’ aspirations and Cressida’s coy rebuffs. Eventually, they find each other in love. Then it gets interesting. Betrayal and heartache guides Troilus into Chaucer’s main theme in the final pages. The games of love and human drama are all ultimately foolish and small-minded affairs. Life is wasted on the self-absorbed infatuations which consume us. Life is about the adoration of God. It’s a quick bait-and-switch Chaucer pulls at the end. The edition I read is a translation that attempts to mimic the rhyme of Chaucer’s English. I have no idea how accurate and true the translation is to the original. There seems to be an inherent problem in reading a translation of a poem. Where the author may have agonized over a turn of phrase, a punctuation mark or a simple word, we are always left with a shadow of the intent. In the end, unless you are going to analyze the Middle English, George Philip Krapp’s translation was easy to read, artfully composed and, at the very least, a conscientious attempt to give us the true Chaucer.

Grace and Daniel are back, finally! A big part of the story circles around how the beings that hide somewhere in the lovers Grace and Daniel influence their growing relationship. Their relationship goes in a more intimate and sexy way on the one hand, on the other there appears to be the danger of distance. The relationship between Grace and Daniel is loaded with a lot of tension, which is released over the course of the story, leading to an explosive ending. There are dangerous and dark things going on and I promise you won't be bored by Bree's sequel to THE DARK DIVINE. This book has a fantastic prologue and ending. The prologue just throws you into the story with a moment of early surprise. Then we get an action-loaded ending, nerve-racking and it made me so curious for THE SAVAGE GRACE. My fingers were tingling for the next book in the series. The title, THE LOST SAINT, is very fitting and makes up a big part of book two. The search for Jude, the hope for his return. As before Grace’s family is a big part of the story, too. In the second book in this series the religious background of the Divine family isn’t addressed as much as in THE DARK DIVINE. We meet some new characters, of course, and one of them really made me hate him. There’s also a new guy involved who doesn’t only wake Grace’s interest. He is that hot stranger with a special role in the story. Find out yourselves, you’ll be surprised at how his relationship to Grace develops. I can only say that Bree Despain found exactly the right path. Her writing is awesome! THE VERDICT 5/5 ***** THE LOST SAINT- A dark and dangerously attractive sequel to THE DARK DIVINE! THE LOST SAINT is the fulminant sequel to Bree Despain’s THE DARK DIVINE. I liked the first book, but totally fell in love with the second. It convinces with an even darker notion and more exciting plot turns.

One of my students gave me the book to read, claiming it was "really good", so I took her advice and gave it a shot. I am a fan of paranormal lit, and being a teacher of teens, I try to keep up on the latest and the greatest in their literature. Not going to lie, when the book opened, I was definitely drawn in. I didn't mind that Ethan was not your typical fifteen year old boy being raised almost entirely by a woman named Amma. I liked their quirks. The whole "father in the study" was a bit much, and of course I regarded him as a selfish dirtbag, neglecting that fact that he was not the only person who lost someone when Ethan's mother died. (I'd hoped there would be more to this than him drawing insane circles, but perhaps in the next book?) The introduction of Lena was intriguing, the addition of the mean girl-mentality pretty regular in small town public schools, so I was in. As the book progressed, however, I found myself becoming increasingly bored. I felt like the same events just kept happening over and over again. Some parts of the book made absolutely no sense, and when Uncle Macon refused to let Lena attend her own birthday party and she ran up to her room in dismay, and then Ethan went to the party without her? Ridiculous. He was there to protect her and his easy abandonment seemed unbelievable and was only rectified when Lena "snuck" out without the knowledge of her Uncle and his spy dog. Even typing it, I feel a bit silly. In the end, I was unimpressed, and glad I hadn't purchased the book myself. Still, my students like it, and though I can't say I agree, I will most likely read at least the second installment so I can see if, perhaps, the writers will grow, as I hope they will.
