I was in the library on Friday picking up an Interlibrary Loan book, and noticed the Devil in Dover sitting on the New Arrivals shelf. Less than 48 hours later I have read it. Damn, I enjoyed this book. First things first - Lebo is a journalist, and so the book is very clearly written and a fast read. It covers the Dover Trial in Pennsylvania, where a creationist school board attempted to alter Dover's science curriculum so that Intelligent Design would be taught alongside evolution. Local parents sued, and it became a litmus test case for the teaching of religious concepts in science classes, much like the Scopes Monkey Trial and the case that caused the ruling that teaching creation science in biology courses was unconstitutional. It is fascinating. Lebo covered the trial and so her account is firsthand - but she is also local to the area, and grew up within shouting distance of Dover. She is probably someone who could be considered agnostic, but her father was not only religious but the owner of a local conservative religious radio station, and her account is scattered with meditations on their relationship. Beginning with no thorough scientific background, she describes her own first impressions of Intelligent Design (as a pretty good idea) and the evolution of her thoughts as she educates herself on the issues. Many of the plaintiffs in the suit, parents of children who would be subject to the altered curriculum, were themselves religious, whether Catholic, Mormon, or Baptist. She covers the bonds that formed between people in both camps, how the battle tore the tiny town apart, the bravery of the parents, and the arrogance of the school board - it is, above all, a book about people. I never thought the lead up to and execution of a long legal battle could be written to be a quick and interesting read, but Lebo proves me wrong.

Tanrı Matematikçi Mi? - Mario Livio TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

In his novels, Anthony Trollope is gifted with such a fine moral sense that it is almost always a pleasure to read him. Within two or three chapters of the beginning, I am cast into interesting dilemmas usually related to marriage. Never have I encountered a writer who is so admirably consistent on such an involved subject matter. In Doctor Wortle's School, the subject matter relates to unintentional bigamy. A young man in holy orders goes to America to teach at a university and encounters a young woman there who had been married to a base scoundrel named Ferdinand LeFroy. When LeFroy's own brother Robert assures him that Ferdinand died in Mexico, young Reverend Peacocke returns to Missouri and marries the young widow. Except Ferdinand was not only not dead, but he visits the young marrieds deliberately to discomfit them -- not to pick up where he left off with his wife, but just to see what he can get out of the clergyman. The Peacockes flee to England, where the husband becomes a teacher at Dr. Wortle's school in Bowick. The news gets out, however, when Robert LeFroy turns up at the Peacocke's doorstep and tries to blackmail them for living bigamously. Peacocke returns to the United States with his brother-in-law LeFroy, who, once they land on American soil, tells him at Ferdinand is indeed now dead. Peacocke travels to San Francisco to find proof. All this time, the good Dr. Wortle allows Mrs. Peacocke to live on the grounds of the school, despite the fact that the Bishop, a popular journalist, and a notorious scandal-monger named Mrs. Stantiloup have done what they could to destroy his reputation. Half the parents notified the good Doctor that they were withdrawing their sons from the highly regarded school, and it was anticipated that the school would close around the Christmas holiday. Things turn out well, but you'll have to read Doctor Wortle's School for all the glorious details. While not the very best of Trollope's novels, it is still within hailing distance of the very best.
