Third person omniscient writing that's maybe to thorough with longer chapters and long paragraphs. One feels that this story may never end. This was a 3star novel.

Hearing about this book, I would have expected it to be fairly pathetic (sorry, Sachar). But then I read a couple reviews that said it was actually quite good, so I decided to read it anyway. And then I read it and ended up thinking it was somewhere in between. Not amazing, but not the awful piece of shameless coasting-on-the-awesomeness-of-the-previous-book book that I originally expected. I think, really, the highlight of the book is something that Sachar does really well in most of his stuff: Telling readers, without being preachy, that they control their destinies. (view spoiler) The point he makes is that you can't let other people tell you what your choices are; you have to think for yourself. I especially like this because, of course, Stanley had very little control over a lot of the physical events in his life. But he did have control over how he looked at and dealt with them. Anyway, based solely on that element of the book and a couple other good "morals to the story" (again, without feeling annoyingly preachy), I would have rated it higher. But for me there wasn't enough other substance backing it up. On the other hand, it's so exceptionally short that it's probably worth the read anyway, if you liked Holes. Rating: G

This one is a good testament to why people should avoid falling in love with 'players' however gorgeous and charming.

I had this book picked for me for a challenge. I love this author and this book has been on my TBR and Kindle for way too long. I also was excited because I could use this for 2 more challenges. Those are the positive things. One can tell this is among James Patterson's first books, it just didn't have the punch he is so known for. Way too many characters to keep track of, editing issues, not to mention far more violence than necessary. Far, far below his standard of writing. I'll put it this way, if I had read this before I read any of his other books, I never would've picked up another book by him.

While the slight time travel element in the story is a little hokey, the author does a fabulous job of exploring all of the facets of society in early 19th century England.

Give this to the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" fans! Max is convinced he "technically" isn't a bully because he doesn't actually steal from kids or beat them up. Still, he's a bully all right and after a mean trick on "Nerdstrom", one of his classmates, parents and teachers gang up to punish him by making the kid he bullied his math tutor. Lessons are learned by all. Max is not a nice kid so the ending does feel a little abrupt. Max and his equally mean older brother also play a really mean trick on their mom (which ends with someone being taking away in an ambulance) and we never see any real remorse or understanding (or punishment!) for this. The book is an easy read, with small black and white drawings throughout; the Australian setting adds a little interest but is not distracting. Hopefully there will be a sequel to clear up some of the questions left unanswered in this book.
