The Federalist Papers, this very edition, were required reading for the U.S. History and Government course mandated for all students during their junior year at Maine Twp. H.S. South in Park Ridge, Illinois, along with such documents as The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, The Constitution of the United States of America, etc. The Constitution had, of course, also been required in junior high school along with that of the State of Illinois, but I much preferred the level of discussion in high school.

Love this sequel to Labyrinth. The books take place in Lanquedoc, so I enjoy reading about places I know like Carcassone & the Aude. They flip back and forth between modern and medieval times. Always trying to figure out what is going on so I end up reading them in one day. The third comes out later this year.

I've learned some new insights into the Prophet Joseph and some new perspectives of Church history in context I didn't know. Very good book if you want to learn some things that are not often discussed in the life and personality of the Prophet Joseph.

I don't want to say that I "enjoyed" reading a book about a marriage coming to a horrible end. But she writes well and the story was very interesting. She goes out of her way to be fair to her ex... so much so that I think he was perhaps worse than she's making him out to be. And that makes it even a little sadder.

Never took me so long to finish a book. Does that mean it wasn't interesting?, well it was interesting. `But maybe Eco gave us a little too much information and too little emotion. But still 4 points because the subject was so interesting, the conspiracy theories dealing with anti semitism. Even a direct link with the Holocaust .

I heard about this book in my adolescent lit class because we were studying Newbury Award winners. However, I later heard that it wasn't that great. Two years later, I read the Edward Tulane and Tiger Rising book and really liked it, so my interest was renewed. This is a book I read aloud to Natalie mostly while nursing. Unlike many Newbury winners, I really liked this one and saw how it was unique enough to make it worthy of the award. The basic idea of the story is very simple - an oddball mouse saves a princess from an evil rat - but DiCamillo spreads the story out into three pieces and then brings those characters together in the last section of the book. I really enjoy stories with that type of structure. I also liked how the narrator addressed the reader. You don't see that often and this book did it every chapter. It was a bit darker than I expected, but not so much that it became inappropriate for children. Great illustrations, too; only could be better if they were color.

I learned quite a bit from this book and appreciated the ideas and thoughts it evoked about the evolution of city-dwelling and the challenges and advantages of urban life. The recent threat of a pandemic flu was an interesting backdrop for reading the story of the deadly cholera outbreak in 1854 London (which is the central story of the book). But there are many other side-issues that intrigue - for example, the ability or inability of the scientific community to think about new ideas outside the politically-correct and accepted theories of the day. People who think "outside the box" are sometimes so ostracized in their day, and in a few years hailed as brilliant, the cause of a great turning point in history. I was also astounded to think about how far we have come in just a handful of decades in the world of science, medicine, and technologically solving the challenges of living together in large groups. The conclusion and epilogue were relevant and interesting!
