i'm really excited about reading this book. from the Salon review: "The redwood defines "superlative," not only in terms of big, but in terms of complicated. It is "the largest and tallest individual living organism that has appeared in nature since the beginning of life on the planet." The fern gardens in old redwood crowns are second only to Olympic Peninsula rain forests in their density, and scientists estimate the crowns hold so much water they function as airborne aquifers, supporting species such as salamanders and copepod crustaceans, the most abundant animals in oceans. The oldest titans, such as Ilúvatar, in Prairie Creek Redwood State Park, contain some 37,000 cubic feet of wood and are so dense you could "put on a pair of snowshoes and walk around on top and play Frisbee there." Many of the trees, Preston explains, reiterate themselves numerous times in the crown, repeating their own shape in smaller scales of size in the form of a fractal. Ilúvatar has done so six times, creating "Ilúvatars within Ilúvatars, " and is considered one of the most complex living structures ever discovered."

Lewis' Space trilogy is incredible. His practical views on the reality of God reach beyond the narrow scope of religion and into truth. This is the best fiction trilogy I've ever read.

I wasn't planning on reading this since I really, really didn't like the Kiterunner, but Yocheved piqued my interest, and the premise sounded a little more my speed. Well, in theory it was - but I still don't like his writing style - his characters are sketched very one dimensionally, which I found true in Kiterunner, as well, though to a lesser extent than this book - it was also super disturbing - granted, after A Fine Balance, I could probably handle anything, but this was really pretty bad - it at least had some elements of hope, though. I think that the bottom line is that I really enjoy non fiction about Afghanistan much more - the fiction is sort of Ayn Randish in that it's a poor excuse for trying to jam in all the details of the revolution and calling it a novel. The writing is pretty poor and the plot is just sad and I didn't feel I knew anyone in the book. It also spanned a lot of time, so things just seemed choppy to me. Not to worry, 9.11 made an appearance, but like everything else in the book it was sort of perfunctory.

She and Gretchen meet and are surprised to discover they're twins. Grace starts training with Gretchen, when they find out they're really triplets. Great action, side romances, this book is an exciting new twist on the paranormal story. Great cliff-hanger ending, can't wait to read the sequel.
