One of the most overrated books of all time. Get over it already, the childish politics don't hold up or apply or any crap more than they ever did. The main characters are not compelling and the whole feel of the book is boring and depressing

Very different from traditional vampire books. Vampires exist and are known to exist only by the people of this one little town. Once you leave the town, people don't know about the vampires. That is, if they let you leave town. Though different, it was very surprising with many unexpected plot twists. There were a few instances where the rules were somewhat baffling and didn't seem too well constructed, but a pretty good book if read with an open mind.

I’m giving this book 1.5 stars because it included the basic elements that a fantasy tale should have and because I reserve one star for books that are in my opinion truly terrible. This book wasn’t terrible but I certainly didn’t enjoy it either, and the bottom line is that I didn’t finish the book. The story failed to pull me in and I lost interest about halfway through. It was much too long and it really started to drag out for me-and this is coming from someone who enjoys reading large epic fantasy novels such as the books in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series or A Song of Ice and Fire series. After a couple of days of plodding along and pushing myself to keep reading, I finally realized that I just didn’t care what happened one way or the other and decided to call it quits. Really it all comes down to a couple of main issues: the story didn’t maintain my interest and I didn’t like the characters or feel invested in them. This is the first Melina Marchetta book that I’ve read and I understand that this is her first foray into writing fantasy. I’m wondering if I might have had a different experience with this author if I had started with one of her YA novels instead.

First of all, I think that this book should be called The Summerhouses-plural. There were at least 5 in the book, I lost count. LOL This book was so much more than I expected. It was the first book that I have read by Jude Deveraux, so I didn't really know what to expect. I thought it was going to be a fluffy, romancey story - which I don't like, but it was much deeper than that. It was so enthralling that I didn't want to put it down. I liked reading about the women's stories, then the alternate lives that they tested out. They had the choice to keep the lives they had, or the new reality. Very interesting. I will definitely read more by this author.
